Is there ANY way to play this game?

I have the looting bug. When I install the 3rd patch I get a black screen, then it sends me back to desktop without any messages. And no, I dont want to install Co8 or anything else that adds fan-made content.

Question: Is it actually possible to, you know, play this game, the game that I bought? I have searched through different forums, googled, EVERYTHING, and there is simply no answer to how to to get the game running with the 3rd patch.

    Please help.

Also, thanks very much for the Co8 guys who force us to use their content only if we want the stupid looting bug eliminated. Really great guys *glares*.

EDIT: Ok, I searched more and discovered that Moebius's patch fixes the looting bug, but adds a lot extra content(like higher levels of which I strickly disapprove). In the zip file there were a bunch of stuff and I, as recommended, took out only thetemple.dll and replaced it. The looting bug is gone but Im wondering if the patch installed new content to my game.

err... If you install the co8 mod you don't have to use the fan made content. I've been playing this with the fan made content and it's much better than the original. The original is too easy and doesn't have as many quests.

Might I ask why you are so concerned with new content? New content can only make the game better. I trust the guys at co8 not to put something in that will make it worse.

Some people prefer to play the game in its original state without a number of modifications added. Especially if it's the first time.

I thought the Co8 mod allowed you to pick and choose what you want to install (at least the version from 2 years ago did). Has this changed? If not, all you need to do is to untick the option to install all the extra content and just go with the modified temple.dll (which, I believe, is what fixes all the bugs and not much else)

The Co8 patch DOES let you choose. Option B is don't bother with the ginormous Co8 patch and dig around the Net for Livonya's mod (1.51 or something). It fixes lots of bugs and adds just a touch of new content.

I ran through the game a couple years ago with just Livonya's mod (which is now part of Co8 patch) and had no problems. I recently installed the Co8 patch and tried to run through again but ran into a crash bug when I try to enter the town of Nulb. I go to Co8's forums and find dozens of folks with the exact same bug and no apparent solution other than reinstall and start over. No thanks. This game is kinda fun but God almighty I'm not gonna bother at this point.

This is innaccurate information. Livonya's mod was the first major new content mod that we integrated into our modpack (version 4 and onward). It does contain a great deal of bugfixes, but it also contains a great deal of new content.

The installation utility for the modpack makes a limited number of the mod's elements optional. However, this functionality should not be viewed as a distinction between bugfixes only and bugfixes plus new content, because it simply isn't that. The closest thing to a bugfixes only release is our version 3.0.4 mod, which is available in the downloads section at Co8.org. Be forewarned that this version doesn't fix near the number of bugs that the current version does, however.

Lastly, the poster above is correct about the Nulb-related crashes. The reasons for this problem are rather elusive, but we are investigating. Unfortunately, with development of the Keep on the Borderlands module currently running at full speed, we don't have a lot of time or resources to devote to the problem right now. We do hope to have the issue addressed in the next modpack release.

I came a long way whit the co8 modpack installed on a vista pc. I installed it after the patches. But the modpack's exe file gave an error, so I played whit the nomal exe file. I made it to the fire node. Then a control bug came along and I just had it.

Weird. It was really there like a shadow version of the game. I or windows really made a mess of it. It had its own icons and exe file. Can it be Shar's doing?

I never played with patch 3. I was using Co8 long before that came out. That said, I think the best "fix" to the looting bug (which the OP isn't going to like, I'm sure) is to NOT use Troikas NPCs. Create your own party only. The NPCs are pretty hollow anyway. Nothing like the very lively and interactive NPCs of Baldur's Gate, for example. Even if they do have extra dialogue, it's usually just worthless filler. Nothing that makes you say, hey, I'm glad NPCx is in my party.

If you are wanting more than 5 members, I believe there is an option at Co8 that will allow you to increase party size without changing/adding content (at least there was at one time).

Wow, I can't imagine playing ToEE without the Co8 mods...

Seriously, once you play it with them, you realise that the vanilla game sucked even more then you belived possible.

Well, I would never consider playing without Co8 at this point either, but for a new player I'm not so sure this is a good idea. In addition to many, many bug fixes, Co8 makes several encounters much more challenging, and adds several new challenges as well. Probably not recommended for the first runthrough (in spite of the bug fixes).

I personally think its a good idea to initially play ToEE without any mods as well. At least that way you get to see what the intent and delivery of the original developers was, and you can then make an informed determination yourself as to whether or not it could be improved by mods.

I don't agree with that. I've played with and without Co8, and while I believe the game is much better with the mod it's still very good without it, and after patching there are no really serious bugs. In fact the worst bug I encountered was with the mod installed (the Air and Water temples would attack me on sight, making it very hard to do anything on level 2 of the Temple)
