Specialist wizards would be more fun to play if Bioware actually implemented more of their negatives. -15% learning other school spells (if difficuly is set to at least core rules) could be a big deterent, and I would love to have everything -1 saving throw vs. the specialists school. Xan with a bunch of enchantment spells would own. Hold monster/Domination/Chaos :)

Imoen is a crybaby who only wants people to notice her. Nalia is not much better either.
Concerning their magic abilities, yes then Imoen could be a successfull member in the party, but I'd much rather go with Nalia then cuz shes a lot more good-looking and not as irritating. And if your own character is a mage or sorcerer, you do NOT need to put up with those spoiled brats!
Anyhow, I allways go with Jan. Hes an average spellcaster, a descent personality (allthough a bit overdone) and an excellent thief when it comes to traps and illusions!

Imoen is no more powerful than Nalia mage wise. They have identical stats as far as intelligence and dexterity goes. The only bonus that Imoen has over Nalia is the higher thief skills. Some could say that Nalia counters that with her special ring that gives her ac and fire resistance. Depending on how many mods you have and how fast you get to Imoen their levels can even be nearly identical but Imoen can be a bit behind in the number of memorized spells when you first have access to her. Otherwise they basically made two of the same character. The only substantial reason I've heard for taking Imoen is the fact that she's your sister and been a long time companion so they take her for those connections or the fact that she needs less items to be an affective thief.

Jan at least levels in both mage and Thief so you at least have some control in what his thief skills develop into based on what you really want. His backstab improves. But being dual classed it is slow. It can still reach respectable levels though by the end of the game. If not as high as some of the others. The one drawback that counts no matter what is his slowness to level. If you love his personality then great. If you don't then he has a second issue. He's got a major personality and your going to have to fight your urge to kill him 3 or 4 times for Personal Internal Satisfaction for a good portion of the game.

A PC multi M/T can be severely deadly, Jan is no different. Besides telling stories about close to anything that is.
