    hey what about surprise attacks

  6. Moral of the Story

Dexterity remains the most important roll for any class, any time, any place.

Most GM and player fudging on the rules of D&D has to do with helping people with low dex. survive past their first encounter with a field mouse.

BG makes it possible for low dex characters to survive by obfuscating the whole calculation, which is why we are having this discussion.

    Surprise attacks in AD&D ? I guess you're confusing with 3E, Igor.

And well, if you mean Dex being vital for gaining initiative, it's not thàt important biggreenpriest. After all, it gives but a measle bonus compared to the random effects of a d20, and you always have to hit to do damage of course.

Something I forgot to add, if you're having multiple attacks per round, they take place after everyone has done his first attack/cast spell.

  8. Lord Bane,

I realize it has only a small effect on initiative. But if you miss half the time, it doesn't matter what the D20 says.

I can't recount how many times I gained initiative only to miss, miss again, and have a second level spell go off in my face. Or arrows of perpetual tickling take away those annoying extra HP's.

Again: High dex makes the d20 much less meaningful; especially at lower levels, the other guy is going to miss a lot with his 10-14 dex, whether he gets initiative or not.

I bow to your RPG supremacy in this matter, though. I haven't played any pen and paper stuff other than Battletech in a few years.

BTW, in BT, you just try to get 5/7 speed and more than 20 points per damage on your opponent on a group-weapon shot.
