HP Memristor SSDs by Summer 2013?

    HPs is targeting its memristor technology as a flash memory replacement by Summer 2013 including SSDs.

    A spokesperson said it could end up being an order of magnitude lower in cost and meeting or exceeding flash performance in all categories. Apparently endurance data is being accumulated at 10^12 cycles (where flash is 10^5 to 10^6).

    If they start using it: cheaper smart phones (or more profits for the Apples and Samsungs of the world). And faster memory speed, but I would guess that isn't the limiting factor in phones.

    Edit: barmy beat me to it... Stupid slow phone :p

    Memristors are a fourth type of passive electronic device (the other three being capacitors, inductors and resistors) that changes resistance based on amount and direction of current flowing through it. HP was the first to create a working device, and they can be used for various purposes including electronic nonvolatile memories (like flash memory).

    The first memory HP is targeting to compete against with this tech is flash memory, and according the the spokesperson it will be cheaper to manufacture, and have better performance i.e. read/write speeds, number of write cycles (endurance) etc. Flash memory is used in various places including Solid State Drives for PC and basically all the mobile tech.

    Since Solid State Drives (SSDs) are currently made with flash memory and flash has a fairly low write cycle endurance (somewhere between 100,000 and 1,000,000 program/erase cycles) the SSDs must have extra memory allocated to them and special write algorithms for "wear levelling" so that parts of the memory don't wear out faster than desired (i.e. faster than the design lifetime fo the drive). Replacing the flash memory in a SSD with this new memory should make a cheaper, faster SSD with apparently at least a million times more write cycle capability. SSDs are already much faster than the magnetic hard disk drives, but they cost a lot more as well.

    Hmmm Will the controller chip be the next bottleneck, or the new-ish SATA?

    I have Oblivion installed on the old ssd and it starts up pretty fast.
