vanilla mind flayers are easy -- mordy swords and skeleton warriors block the pathway, between them and your party -- just shoot them to pieces~~

improved ones are another story. A high lvl party can survive their newly added nasty spells, but never the brain-eating. since they can turn invisible at will, it's very important to spread out your party, and pay attention to feedback text -- ofthen it would indicate whom is the current target for mind flayers.

note, mordy sword and skeleton warriors are immune to brain eating since they don't have brain~~

bingo. when I first picked up this idea on the boards, it was a godsend. Just haste and bless 5 of those buggers then they'll cut up everything in their path. :D

That's a good tip. I used my (hasted) thief and backstabbed my way around.

I always haste the heck out of everyone and equip as many ranged weapons as possible. They remind me a lot of the sirens in BG1--really nasty things with fairly low hitpoints, so you're finished if you don't kill them off quick-like.
...I also dissolve into a weeping puddle when I encounter one, but I don't think that's necessarily a 'tactic'.
