How much realm downtime should I expect on WoW?

OK, I've had the game and played with it for couple of weeks. It was rather aggravating to install, as I never solved a slow download problem despite my DSL service; the WoW tech support wasn't much help and neither was my ISP. But I got up and running eventually.

However, since I started with this at the first of January, I have been unpleasantly surprised at how often all the realms are down for various reasons. This week, for instance, on two of the four days I've tried to play, the realms were down for several hours - as they are now.

I realize I often play at off-peak hours, daytime in Eastern time zone. But I have to ask you more experienced players, how much realm downtime is really to be expected in this game? Are there regularly scheduled days for maintenance I need to be aware of?

I ask because I'm not sure I want to continue beyond my trial period if it's as frustrating as this just to get on and play.

I think they were having trouble with the arena functions, and that led to an increase in down time. This was an unusual occurance from what I have heard from more experienced players. The one in particular says that the Arenas didn't work right under the new patch. I know they are all down for several hours on Tuesday morning. The time frame for me is 8 am to 2 pm, so I just have to find other things to do on Tuesdays...

Hmm, well, I guess what I need to do is check the realm status occasionally when I'm not free to play and just see what the pattern is. If Tuesday is the normal maintenance day that's a good thing to know and actually won't affect me much. My days off are later in the week, usually.
    Thanks for the info, Gnarf.

My experience is that the realms are more or less only down during scheduled maintenence and during patch days. Sure every third month or so they might go down for a few hours but again, usually in relation to major patches. Your experience may differ depending on server though, do you play on a very highly populated one? They might go down more often due to stress but my experience is that WoW is extremely stable and the downtime to come when you expect it in relation to patches.

Now that you mention it, I believe that the one realm I have three characters on (2 of my 4 main) did have a queue to get on the one night during peak hours, but I was able to ply a different character that night...
