How does the speed level apply in PST?

[IMG] I now that it is a fraction of the round (i.e. speed of 1 means that you would make an attack every 1/10 of a round, so 1 is fastest 10 is slowest), but in PST Vhalors axe seems as fast as a dagger to me although it says speed of 10.
Could someone clarify me on the subject?

I'm not sure about Vhalors' axe specifically but here's a thought. I read in the BG manual that the animation you see on screen is just to represent the combat and does not reflect all that is happening in terms of the dice rolls - "a charcater in BG may make a 'cosmetic' swing...this adds to the frentic nature of combat"

I guess the same applies to PsT, so maybe it just looks like his axe is swinging quickly. Also, don't higher level fighters get a speed of attack bonus as they become more expert in a weapon. This bonus seems to vary from game to game though.

As to your point about the 1/10ths in the round. A speed of 1 doesn't mean you attack every tenth of a round. A normal fighter with a normal weapon still only attacks once every round (as they improve they might get more attacks per round). The speed refers to when in that round he attacks and so determines who attacks first. So a thief with a dagger of speed one will attack before a mage can release a spell with a speed of 10. I can't remember if this applies for PsT but attacking first will usually stop the spell being cast. So faster weapons can be very useful. However, the slower weapons usually do more damage.

Yes, it's only animation - the "Final Judgment" axe trully acts on it's speed 10.
