I see public schools as an instrument of the "state" as well - The corporate state. This would very much be in keeping with that idea that corporate interests are taking over the public schools with right-wing autocrates who are busy making average citizens buy expensive lunches, rather than bringing them from home to save money [no profit for the big boys] :shake:

...or it could be just one rouge principal who thinks that she knows best for everyone else. :hmm:

I have seen this debate go in so many different directions I'm not sure what I believe.

    1. Our corporate overlords squeezing even more revenue out of us.
    2. Our governments making it a hidden tax as they get a cut of the lunch money and therefore can use it to help balance their budgets without incurring any additional costs.
    3. Democrats forcing more people to buy lunch so they can force the corporations to hire more union workers at inflated salaries and have them pay dues which are used to fund Democrats.
    4. Liberals who are convinced that everyone needs the government to take care of them from cradle to grave and have taken away the basic human right to eat what you want.
    5. The damn allergy people who for the sake of one person will make thousands miss out on food they want to eat.
    6. When all else fails, blame Monsanto
    7. It is George Bush's fault

I'm sure I've seen more, but I can't come up with them off the top of my head. I'd like to think that the Principal is telling the truth and she is trying to get people to eat healthier. Although, I personally don't think that is her responsibility and believe she has overstepped her authority.

That was sorta my point, Snook. The whole "corporate thing" was just sarcasm, but I'm sure LKD knew that. :)

Teaching kids that you must at least TASTE food you haven't tested before - check.
Teaching kids (and parents) that soda & chips alone doesn't fill up all of the peg holes that need to be filled in order to be called "healthy, well-rounded food" - check.
Assuming that one-size-fits-all policy meets all requirements for nutrition, taste, affordability and what have you - doomed to fail.

Seems like a prime example on stuff that should be exempt from the wheels of bureaucracy, other than as guidelines and official recommendations.
