    Agreed.

This is an example to my Theory of Progressive Allowance. Allow French tablets, abortions will be requested and made to follow. Allow abortions, the killing of unaborted children will do the same. Just as it works with increasing tolerance for public display of deviated sexuality. Or sects.

Well, we could also make them come without any form of sexual activity (actually some conservatives might find this idea quite enjoyable ;) ), without making the mother pregnant for whole nine months... We could even raise them in labs so parents wouldn't have to bother.

Well, and when we're done with the kids, let's move on to the grannies

I think it's as much a case of people not wanting rather than wanting a specific gender.
what about people who have children and pass on their various defects to them... if this acceptable? we always seem to consider procreation a fundamental human right... maybe it's time this concept was reviewed?

Can someone please explain to me this distinction? I certainly can't see it. AFAIK, with the exception of a very small chance of having a hermaphrodite, or the small chance of having a child that is genetically male but lacks a receptor to respond to testosterone and thus develops female, you either have a boy or a girl. So since there are usually only two possibilities to consider, isn't wanting one the same thing as not wanting one? Is there a difference in saying "I want a boy" as opposed to "I don't want a girl"? Or vice versa of course. I mean, other than changing the words, is there any difference in their meaning?

    The distinction is fairly clear.

If you want something, it doesn't necessarily mean you do not want the other; it may just be that you like one better than the other. So if for example, you wanted a boy, you wouldn't be all that disappointed if you in fact got a girl.

However, if your position is that you do not want a girl, you likely would not be happy at all if you got one.

You wouldn't? Then why state you wanted a boy in the first place? If you wouldn't be disappointed that you had a girl, you wouldn't say you wanted a boy. You would say that it didn't matter.

Not to over-simplify, but if I prefer Coke, but the vending machine only has Pepsi, I would be disappointed it didn't have Coke.

With a child is a bit more obvious, as there is only two possible scenarios - boy or girl. Saying that you want a boy is equivalent to saying that you don't want a girl, and it directly implies you would be disappointed if you had a girl - I'm not saying such a person wouldn't love thier daughter - but just that ideally, they would have preferred to have a son. So perhaps you feel the distinction is clear, but I do not.

I don't think you read my post carefully enough.

I said the fact you have stated a preference does not imply you will accept no alternative. Let me clarify the example I gave above. If you want a boy, that does not necessarily mean you don't want a girl, just that you want a boy more. You will be disappointed if you got a girl but not that disappointed.

So, if you explicitly say you do not want a girl, that is much different than saying you want a boy because even if you want a boy, a girl may still be acceptable. If you say you do not want a girl, then a girl is not acceptable to you.
