Thompson got the initial 'boy are we glad HE entered' shot in the polls. His decline was expected. Once the initial intrigue left the mindless masses that really have no clue of who they will vote for, the polls leveled out where most thinking men and women though they would be.

Thompson himself knew he would need to do some hefty campaigning to catch Guiliani. The primaries have barely started and there is certainly no reason to count Fred out at this point.

He's tied for my number two choice still.

    @ Snook,

As I've said many times, I would gladly vote for a Republican candidate if I thought he'd make an effective, respectable leader, and who had a sober outlook on Iraq and fiscal responsibility. I think it's safe to say Thompson's first few public appearances haven't been terribly impressive, hence, I'm underwhelmed, as I was expecting something more from good old Arthur Branch. I used to be a Republican and was until recently a big fan of John McCain. I'm a social liberal, fiscal conservative and registered Independent. Please don't project your partisan hackiness on me. Frankly, and this isn't meant as an insult, it's Republicans like you - who tend to liberal-bash in place of a reasoned argument - who made me want to leave the party in the first place.

And it's not that Bush has done nothing to reign in spending. He perpetuated excess spending to ridiculous levels. Along with Dick "deficits don't matter" Cheney and his 2000-06 Republican congress, Bush has effectively nullified any reputation the Republicans had for fiscal conservatism for a generation. Thompson, so far, doesn't look like he'll do much to restore that reputation.

edit - Yeah, what Aldeth said. :)
