[IMG] I've been following along in the ALFA topics, although I don't read much else these days (too little time). I'm hoping to join ALFA once I get a computer, but that's going to be a couple months or so. In the meantime, I need to familiarize my self with the world of Faerun; I fear I'm woefully ignorant! So I ask you -- which of the FR novels/series should I read to gain a good background on the FR universe, particularly that of Daggerdale, Yartar, Arabel, and the Vast Swamp? I have read next to nothing of any FR books as yet.

It really depends on how much you would like to know about Faerun and how much you are willing to spend on it.

I would suggest the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting if you really don't know much about the FR. It contains a lot of information, about every part of Faerun, but it lacks certain details (I haven't seen Yartar mentioned in it for example). It handles the geography of Faerun, as well as things like history and deities. The FRCS is a good book to get you started.

If you want more of story you could try one of the novels. Those novels however don't tell much about Faerun itself, and are more orientated around one or a few characters.

You could also try Volo's guides if you want to know more about a certain area. Volo's guides are a bit older, so I don't know if you can still buy them. Volo's guides contain more detailed information about certain areas of Faerun, and also describes, for example which buildings you can find in certain cities.

Other more specific books would be The Silver Marches and The North - Guide to the Savage Frontier.

I think, (and this is my personal opinion) if you really want to buy a book about Faerun, that you shouldn't buy more than the FRCS. It contains all the information a player might need. If you want more information about something (which isn't described in the FRCS), you could always ask here or on the ALFA forum, which is easier and cheaper than buying a whole book.

And let me save Tal the trouble by linking to the SP books section: http://www.sorcerers.net/Books/index_man.php (scroll down to find the FR books)
