You speak of some ugly bugs. I have not encountered much in the way of bugs. The sound is working fine for me. Xzar was doing the charge ahead on me in the beginning, but not since they released the last 2 updates. I have not encountered a freezing of the game either. I noted in the beginning I did have Monty run through a wall and got stuck in no-man's land when looting upstairs in the FAI. I just quick-loaded and it never happened again. Who knows.....Overhaul has put out several updates already and is continuing to do so. Hopefully they will solve your issues.

You make a good point above that does give me pause. The lack of banter between the old PCs does seem lessoned. But there is a LOT of banter in my first run through with Dorn, by Dorn. I believe I have completed all of his quests and he is still jabbering a whole lot. Wonder if the new NPC dialogues somehow are shutting down the original content? I might start a second run through tonight with only orignal NPCs to see how the banter flows. You are right, mods did increase banter and that increase is now missing in this game. I don't miss it as some of the mods added an overwhelming amount of dialogue. There were times that I just wanted Xan to shut the hell up! Though I could listen to "Tiax Rules!" all day long for some obscure reason... don't ask...

I think that's mostly due to the same reason as with the other more recent games; the developer has set up their own forums and most of the people playing the game don't venture beyond there. Content-wise though, the EE will be supported on SP.

Just try it....? What the hell...?

If it's nothing but a mod, it's the best damn mod I've ever seen in my entire life. What is it you actually wanted them to do, which they didn't do? New NPC's? Check. New areas? Check. New quests? Check. Lots of new, voiced, dialogue? Check. Welcome gameplay changes? Check. Remember that Black Isle hamstringed these guys a lot with what they could and couldn't change. I'm glad though; there's only so many modifications you can make to a game before you lose what it was in the first place. I think it was balanced really well. Just give it a go before huge judging statements.....

Let's say the hour I saved from installing the widescreen/tutu or bgt and fixpack mods for BG1 is worth more than $10 for me.

Let's say the fact that old mods work with BG:EE with a 6 step process behind it (posted a link to how to do this over a week ago I think...).

Let's say the BGT/Tutu, widescreen mods don't compare to the new interface/native resolutions (bigger screen = actually seeing more at one time...).

Let's say arguments based on principle-of-the-matter have no bearings on gameplay, nor are they "First Impressions" since you haven't played the game. Pretty sure thread was intended for those of us who have played it. There's another thread that discusses whether or not you're going to buy it and why (http://www.sorcerers.net/forums/showthread.php?t=57787).

Edit: Apologizing for any perceived hostility. I only mean to try and keep the thread on track with the OP.

    Good lord. Some delicate fee-fees.

Look - the comment that "$20 isn't much money" kept coming up. So I addressed it.

I will try BG:EE...when the price drops and/or when the many reported bugs have been addressed.

Also - I can and will judge a game based on the half dozen reviews I have read before playing it, particularly when there is a consensus on a number of key points, and especially when one or more said reviews came straight from this very thread. Are we only allowed to post a comment on someone's experience if we've had the same experience ourselves? When the hell did that get added to the forum rules?

I realize a "First Impressions" thread is for the experience of those who've played it. Call me crazy, but the experience of those of you who have played it directly informs whether or not I will bother playing it myself. I was under the impression that that is why people read reviews. That is how I decide which games are worth the investment of what little free time I have these days. I am not discouraging anyone else from buying or playing it.

And as I'll say for the third time now: if you bought it and you're enjoying it, happy gaming. That's all I have to say, I will lurk from here on out.

I'm just gonna say that I agree with DR here.

At the moment, and based on the reviews and comments of people here and elsewhere, and for me personally, I think $20 is too much for a game that's buggier than the original, and which adds less content than would be available through mods. If even half of the bugs and shortcomings in the review Tal linked earlier were true, I would still think it's too much money. I already have a properly working installation of the original, fully modded up and working flawlessly - an installation of BG:EE won't even save me time.

@omnigodly: isn't it normal to respond in the thread that something pops up, rather than go a different thread, copy-paste the relevant info to create the proper context, then reply to it there? Even if it isn't directly related to the OP?

    Not really enhanced

So far it doesn't really feel like an enhanced edition. I haven't gotten to the black pits yet though.

I love the higher resolution with the zooming function, looks better than I expected.

Still finding a few silly things though... Bards can't be chaotic good/chaotic evil, half-elves have specialist mage restrictrions...

I haven't seen much of the game as of yet, because i'm also having a significant problem importing my character of choice.

I'm with DR and Henkie on this. So long as the new version has enough bugs to potentially make the game unplayable or at least very hard to play, I wouldn't pay the $10 for it that I would have to pay for the vanilla game. Once the worst bugs have been eliminated, I will probably give it a shot.

These restrictions also exist in the original game. I think they come from the AD&D rules.

Oh wow you're right. I doublechecked and even BWP has no CG bards. Can't understand why though... it's so stuck in my brain that they can only not be lawful.

I don't mind to pay $20 for this game. I think the game with the improvements deserves the price. But i will not pay any buck for a buggy game. I'm really disappoint with Overhaul for this failed attempt for gain money with our nostalgia.

Until they fix ALL the bugs on the game, i will mind to buy this game. Period.

Interesting tread. I own the game, second hand, but never finished it.

Perhaps next year. Not 16 days from now, but more like February.

I'm finally getting to dig my teeth into the game a bit more, and am currently a good ways into Chapter 3. With the exception of a one time game crash, I haven't encountered any serious bugs. Most of the "enhancements" seem to be cosmetic, and aren't overly noteworthy. I'm sure I'd be a lot more excited about things like High Resolution if I hadn't already been playing with some of these improvements for years -- and worse, in BGEE I can't even choose my resolution, I just have to run with whatever default the game chose for me. Some choice here would be greatly appreciated.

I liked the reworked journal, until I started noticing lots of bugs (quests that remain open after they have been completed, some scrolling weirdness, etc.). Some of the new spell effects look nice, and there are other visual enhancements here and there, but again, nothing that knocks my socks off. Overall the game looks about as good as it did running my modded versions of the game, so I don't feel we gained anything appreciable visually. There are the updated videos, I suppose. Those look pretty good, but the list of included videos is still incomplete. The spell icons in the Wizard and Priest books actually look worse to me, often washed out and dull looking, particularly those icons colored in white. Bleh.

Some of the things I do really appreciate are the non-existent load times when either saving or loading. That's a good amount of time saved over the course of a full run through. I am also really liking Dorn Il-Khan as a companion. Cool character concept. LOVE Gord Marriott's voice as Dorn. It's perfection. I know many would argue that we already have plenty of fan-made NPCs, but I haven't encountered any that quite meet this level of quality. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of Dorn's game content. Rasaad and Neera aren't coming along for the ride this time, as my party members are evil-aligned only. I'm enjoying my first serious evil run through, and I'm definitely still getting my usual Baldur's Gate "high" from the EE (the core of what makes BG what it is is unchanged).

I'm not sure if I'm imagining it, but combat does seem a tad more challenging than I remember, which is welcome. Alternatively, I may just suck at playing more than I used to.

I still have a long ways to go, so the jury is still very much out on EE for me.

"Finally, Sarevok is defeated and I am grow more powerful. My "friends" played their role oh so well. Pathetic fools that they are. I must fight the urge to slay them where they stand. Especially Xzar, his ravings, initially tiresome, are now becoming a nuisance that must be removed. His runt as well. Dorn I will keep at my side, his sword is powerful, I must be wary of him. He will scream in agony when his usefulness is used up. Viconia I lust for. MY beautiful, dark maiden. She will be my consort when I regain my father's glory! The masses will soon fear the name Haragrim Darkmane!"

My evil run through is over. For now. I will wait a week or two and then tackle the Pits before returning for a pass with a Swashy as my next choice. I would guess that there will be 1 or 2 more updates by then.

Those comments weren't added by Beamdog. Those were added by Bioware with the original release of the game in 1998. Just goes to show you, you can still be surprised by what you find in this game all these years later.
