I've finally got a Mage beyond Ostagar and I went for a Hexer or Entropy specialist. I didn't want to go for damaging or healing spells since I've had some experience with these playing Morrigan and Wynne.

So far it's been a blast. The Entropy line is great for crowd control and bosses. Paralysis and Mass Paralysis work wonders. The Hexes, especially Misdirection Hex and Death Hex are fantastic against bosses who will have a hard time hitting anything while your party will dish out higher damage.

Sleep is a very quick spell to cast and it is very effective when combined with Horror for the Nightmare combo (if the victim is under the effect of sleep it can't resist horror and gets a lot of spirit damage in the process).

Entropic Death is also a very nice option which combines Death Hex and Death Cloud for huge amounts of spirit damage.

I maintain Death Magic at all time and it has saved my Mage's life on countless occasions. Add Drain Life and you have a very hard Mage to take down.

Other spells of note include Curse of Mortality (it's a perfect counter when you have an enemy mage who keeps casting healing spells) and Waking Nightmare (especially when Mass Paralysis and Sleep are cooling down).

The other spells have their uses but I rarely have my character cast them.

Power of Blood (from Warden's Keep) is very useful. Dark Sustenance and Bloody Grasp work well for a Blood Mage/Hexer. The animation for Dark Sustenance is really cool by the way.

I took the Blood Mage and Arcane Warrior specializations but I got distracted with the Arcane Warrior line (in order to wear some really nice mod armour) and I haven't got the best of the Blood Mage abilities yet.

So far it's worked pretty well and it's a rather refreshing way to play instead of spamming Winter Grasp and Cone of Cold all over the place.

Looks like I'm going to have to unlock the Blood Mage specialization and try another mage at some point... that sounds like it would be a blast to play!

I'm quite a fan of the Telekinesis line (Crushing Prison, Mind Blast mostly) and keep Telekinetic Weapons on at all times.

As for Elemental spells, my favourite mage doesn't believe in fire :) - casting Shock a lot (fast recharge, decent damage), also Petrify + Stone Fist (even if the tougher foes resist getting shattered, getting a point-blank ogre petrified helps :p )
    Failing that, Cone of Cold.
Lightning and Arcane Bolt as back-up projectile fire.

Tempest and Blizzard are good for low level crowds, but I'm rarely patient enough to trigger them - only when there are plenty of red dots on the minimap.

Not a fan of Chain Lightning. Takes forever to cast and damage is hardly worth it.

Took Arcane Warrior because it fit the char's theme (snazzy mod armour was a pleasant surprise - and Fade Shroud really looks nice).

Spirit Healer was her second specialization - it gives me enough healing back up to feel comfortable not taking Wynne even to tougher fights. No need for classical healing spells with it.

Dark Sustenance is perfect for lower levels, although I barely use it later on.

I'll probably run a Fade themed mage next (something like Dreamwalker) - with Entropy spells (Walking Nightmare, Death, Paralysis lines) and some Spell Bloom mixed in but haven't tried those directly.

In general, most spell lines have at least one useful spell, but sometimes I just don't want to nuke 3 or 4 spell points to learn it - or I do nuke them and lack points for something else.

That's why I'm cheating in my second runthrough and duplicating the skill, talent and spell tomes. ;)

I don't have a speicific spell list I like. I find all of them to be useful in their own way. My new thing with mages is using Grease and any fire spell. It is too bad mages don't have some form of stealth; it would be nice to cast grease followed up by a fire spell without being seen until the fire spell is cast....
