Ex-NBA Star admits being Homophobic

Well done mate, I'm proud of you. If only all religious people thought as you did. Most religious people, in my experience, carry and nuture hate like it's their baby!

 

This is undoubtedly an unpopular opinion, but perhaps in a way TH should be commended.

I think that all staight people are homophobic - to one degree or another. Everyone is also racist, and sexist.

I consider myself "gay positive", have several gay friends, and have been to gay clubs from time to time... But if pressed, I would have to admit that gay people "creep me out" and make me feel uncomfortable at times. And I believe that to be true with everyone.

The problem is that there are only 2 socially acceptable ways to express intolerance: Total condemntation, or Arrogant Pride. One must either be a total redneck goosestepping gestapo type, or be mr/ms. "I don't even see race/gender/ethnicity/sexuality, I'm completely colourblind."

Intolerance is most likely an unfortunate kneejerk reaction that exists within all of us. We've been subduing it, as best we can, but it seems to bubble to the surface...

I feel that opening the discussions up around racial/cultural/ethnic/sexuality, we'd be a lot closer to realizing that all humans are different, but our commonalities far outweigh our differences.

So yes, Tim Hardaway is a jerk, but at least he's honest. I have more respect for him than the guy who says he is in no way homophobic, but secretly condemns homosexuality. At least we can ask Hardaway to change his mind, the covert homophobe, we can never reach.

Since when is it a crime to speak your mind? First amendment anyone? Someone doesn't want people condemning them for being gay? Don't tell them. You step out of the closet and make your activities known, you'll hear from those that don't approve.

Maybe he could have said it better, after all, don't most NBA players go to college before turning pro?

 

No one is denying that he has the right to say what he said under the first amendment. The first amendment protects all speech, no matter how hateful or ignorant. When Tim Hardaway came out his own proverbial closet and made his racism, ignorance, and bigotry known, he likewise will hear from those who don't approve. And those who disapprove are many.

 

It isn't, which is why he's not been arrested (although there may be grounds for harassment charges?). It is however, highly offensive to the majority of the people, hence the uproar.
