when you defeat the last one you should be teleported to the chess game section of durlags tower.

Assuming you killed all of the elements, (slime, air, fire, ice) have you also killed the greater wyverns to the north? Did you read the messages on the big stone heads? These shouldn't have too much affect, but it's always best to try everything when you can't seem to progress.

Incidentally there is a possible bug in the game which occasionally fails to intitialise certain events (in your case being transported to the chess game). Other instances of this bug have included failure to initialise the Candlekeep arrest scene. It may be a case that you will have to reload an earlier game, and take out the elementals again.

Finally BG sometimes has problems recognaising that a quest has been completed if you are using backstab, or charm spells on the opposition. This happened to me once when I charmed the 2 boss werewolves on the island before they transformed, and so despite having completed the quest nobody recognaised that I had, leaving me stranded.
Always best to try and slaughter the beasts straight out with normal methods than to use more subtle tactics if u are stuck.

Unfortunately that didn't work. I decided to start again. Thanks for the help.
