I was just curious to see if anyone plays Defence of the Ancients (WC3). I'm sure most people that have played Warcraft III would have heard of it.

It's basically a custom map that pits 2 teams against each other, with a maximum of 5 players on each side. The aim of the game is destroy the other team's 'ancient' (The world tree for the sentinel and the frozen throne for the scourge) on the opposite sides of the map.

Each player controls a signle powerful hero and are assisted by computer controlled allies known as 'creeps'. It basically works as a mini rpg as players can level-up their heroes and spend their gold on useful items. It's actually really addictive once you start playing. Most people play public matches over Bnet however there are many leagues that have popped up over the years that host elite games.

So does anyone (that actually still plays wc3) play this?

I know many who do. The map's really for a different kind of crowd though; I only know 4 people who love DotA but are also into RPG's(around 2% of the total people I know who play DotA).

I've played it before, but I'm not into it, but I know many who do play it seriously online. I catch them watching replays on video hosting sites trying to learn strategies. They don't even refer to the game as WC3... just DotA and expected others to know what they are talking about.

Isn't League of Legends pretty much the same thing as DotA? Other than in looks, but that's very much customizable by mods anyway.
