Maybe I will install mods when I am as seasoned of a BG veteran as you guys seem to be. Shamefully, I have completed SoA only once and never ToB. I usually play until my characters are overpowered then quit out of boredom.

There's an improved Shield of Balduran? Egad! Then again, that's in the Improved Items mod, correct?

Tactics doesn't always make the monsters beefier - it just makes most of them fight as though they were controlled by a human player, using similar tactics. The items in Tactics are seldom overpowered (a notable exception being Kuirosan's katana) and the methods that worked to get through lots of enemies before will either be less effective or will more frequently be turned back on you. You install every component of it separately (and it's so easy even a chump like me can do it), and if there's something you don't like the sound/idea of, just don't install it.

I know you said it feels like playing a different game. In many respects, it is, and some mods are unbalancing. I wouldn't recommend those. However, if the game is becoming too simple, too easy or just too repetitive, installing a couple of mods to improve the challenge or just change the scenery a bit is an excellent idea.
