Sarevok is right about Prison conditions. They are too soft, and they drive up the cost of incarceration.

Drew, We're talking about murderers here (assume that they really did commit the crime they were convicted of). They have been sentenced so that they cannot have freedom. For those that actually live better in the Joint, it is not punishment or justice. That is why so many can advocate the Death penalty.

The "comforts" of our prison system have been greatly exaggerated. Human Rights Watch

Murderers shouldn't have as many rights as the rest of us... they're murderers. I will repeat what most of us have been repeating: if they take away peoples' rights (such as life), they forfeit their rights.

I haven't seen a single person in this thread even once disagree with this assertion. No one has suggested that murderers shouldn't be punished for their crimes. We even developed a prison system for exactly that type of thing. Clearly, our prison system is a hit.....since we incarcerate the largest percentage of our population of any industrialised nation.

But when conditions in prison aren't as harsh as they may be in their regular life, then is it really punishing them? Why not put a needle in their arms and be done with it...

If you want to make prisons some sort of hell holes with the sole purpose of the convicts suffering you might as well institutionalize torture. I find there to be no difference between doing the torture directly yourself or just choosing to turn a blind eye to the rapings and beatings that occur withing prisons. The primary purpose of prisons is in my opinion to rehabilitate the convicts to the society and keep them from causing any harm to others. If they find this to be a punishment or not is completely irrelevant for reaching these goals.

It is certainly possible that some idiot chooses prison over his real life but atleast around here it's only really a problem with the few homeless people we have and what they do is break some window of a store to get inside prison during winters. Even these people have enough decency not to kill or rape people because of it.
