What about downloading a warez copy of a copy-protected disk that you're unable to backup? I had to do that with Baldurs Gate II (SOA) disc 2, which REFUSED to produce a working copy, even though the origional worked fine. Darn thing kept producing errors at the intro movie.

Also, on the issue, I asked the professor who was teaching my MCSE training course about this issue a while ago. It was related to the fact that I had an old machine that needed the system software reinstalled, but I found my Windows 95 CD was unusable. He said it was ok to get a "pirated" copy as long as it was the same version I had a license for. The software is licensed, the physical media its on is irrelivant. Which is why a backup is permissible and why you can download a warez copy of a damaged disc. But ONLY if you own a legal copy. I can't empethise the last one enough.

Morality is a slippery creature. So I prefer to stick to the law when making blanket statements. Warez are illegal. Period. You may think it's "okay" to download a pirated copy if you've got a legal one that doesn't work anymore, but I doubt MS's lawyers would agree with you. (Not that anyone really cares what MS thinks, least of all me. :shake: ) Especially when, IIRC, there is a way to get them to ship you a new disc if you prove that you have a legal copy that is broken.

As for your BG2-2 disc, I was able to produce a backup easily, and used it to play (to protect the original) until I got ToB. It's likely your disc/drive had some minor imperfection that you didn't know about which prevented your copy.

It's all moot anyway. I bought another copy, which arrived in yesterday's mail, and I started the mostly missile party. Going to be a bit yet before I fill out the party by acquiring Coran.

On a sadder note, this probably ends my recent Diabloii game.
