I cannot accept that parenting has nothing to do with it. Hell, she cannot even legally drop out of school without parental permission at that age. And even if parenting has NOTHING to do with it, most 16-year old girls don't do this. If the right choice can be figured out by the vast majority of empty-headed teenagers, like I said, I don't think I'm setting the bar that high. As a parent, I would do all I could to stop my child from moving out at 16 - whether they were moving in with a drug dealer or not.

Oh I'll agree with that - but I think shacking up with a pimping drug dealer goes beyond "defiant behavior".

Well then as a father of two girls, what would you do if one of them at 16 wanted to move in with a guy like this? What would your reaction be?

Oh, don't get me wrong, Aldeth, parenting has a great deal to do with it. But it's not the only factor, and as I said, sometimes really good parents get stuck with lousy kids.

It is my understanding that there is a thing called the age of emancipation, which is when children, while still not adults, can move out or drop out regardless of parental consent. I'm pretty sure that in my jurisdiction it's 16. I'll have to summon Beren to get the whole lowdown -- it's the kind of thing a lawyer would know.
