It was bound to happen sooner or later. The stingray probably had enough of the word "crikey" and cut sick on old Steve.

I am not really greiving for the loss of Steve, more so for the loss of what he did as a profession and I find it really sad the he has just had 2 kids in the last couple of years and won't be there to witness them growing up. If I were him I would have taken it a lot slower in the last few years. But then again, he probably had his production company telling him to be his old self for the camera which is sad really.

I think my eyes popped out when i read this on my usual news-site crawl... sure it was inevitible, but it seems like such a shame that he was killed by a stingray of all things.

I agree with the Celestialraven. Would have been better if he had died in a massive stuggle with a croc, not just a quick sting to the chest.

Sad he died.... yes. Surprised.... no. He lived his life to annoy animals. Expected this from a croc, heh.

It's sad and probably the way he would like to have gone (apart from the pain), he'll be missed. I hope that conservationally and environmentally there is somebody to take his place. Like him or not he did a lot of good for the conservation of animals and the environment specifically in Australia, but inspiring others around the world.

    Rest in Peace

Well... damn, he was a nice guy. I'll miss him, but this wasn't a surprise for me, either. He should have stop playing with those animals years ago.

Of all the things I expected him to go not via a crocodile but via a snakebite. Either way he was a standup guy who provided both education and humor in some of the most dangerous situations possible and that, my friends, takes balls.

On a side note: I wonder how long till the video footage of him getting killed is released? I must admit I'm curious to see how it went down.

What an odd way to go. The report I read is that very few people die from a stingray stab. His just happened to go under his ribcage and straight into his heart.

Such a shame...the world needs his kind of crazy nature loving people who lead the way and give other people insights why this planet of ours is such a great place to live and why nature should be preserved...

At least there's a back-up in Rob Bredl*.

EDIT: Found the correct spelling of his name.

Guttedm he was a top fella he was. Completely bonkers, but he had such great enthusiasm.

I remember one thing I watched when he jumped ontop of a crocodile and started wrestling the bloody thing, then he got out of the water and happily declared "He bit me, look! great teeth they have these crocs!" with a massive gash down his arm and a grin on his face. Bonkers. Legend.

    RIP mate
