CRC Error: .cam files not matching the setup's .cab file

    [​IMG] Argh!

    I tried to install NWN. During the installation, I got some CRC Errors saying "The file blabla.cam doesn't match the file in the setup's .cab file. The medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted; contact your software vendor"

    So I checked the CD: No damages visible. Brought it back to the shop and got a new one. Same problem

    Tried to install other games and I got the the same Errors.

    I think there's either something wrong with my CD/DVD writer/reader, or there is some other software problem on my machine.

    My writer works fine. I copied some programs and there was nothing wrong with them.

    Anybody an idea if it might be a software problem?

    Other questions:
    What is a .cam file?
    What is a .cab file?
    What is a 'CRC' Error?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    .cab files are cabinet files which are essentially compressed archives (like a ZIP archive).

    CRC stands for cyclic redundancy check which is a means of calculating a unique number based on the contents of a file so that if anything in the file changed the number calculated would not match the original.

    Ah, thanks.

    Now it seems not to be my cd-drive, because when I downloaded Acrobat Reader and tried to install it, I also got a message about a .cab file.

    I guess something is messing up the files in some way. Perhaps I should re-install windows or so..?

    Yay! I fixed the job.
    Well, actually, my friend Job fixed the job.
    It seemed I had some damaged memory and he fixed it by plugging in some chips from an other old pc. He did a lot more and now my pc is actually doing something. There are still some little troubles, but it works fine.
