Coran is better then Kivan!

Why does everyone think Kivan is the best archer, If we all take a closer look we see than Coran is de best!

archer top 3 list:

1.Coran - 20 dex ++ to Bows,Elf
2.Kivan - 17 dex ++ to Bows,Elf + Ranger
3.Khalid - 16 dex ++++ to Bows

THIS ARE THE FACTS, tel me if i'm wrong but you could check it whit the AD&D rulebook

From the facts you poted there it shows that Coran has a very good bonus to hit with a bow, and Kivan comes second. Khalid, who I personaly mildly dislike does have the advantage of being able to put for slots into bow proficientcy.
But while bows for fighters are very useful and every fighter should have a ranged weapon in my opinion I think that using them as specialised archers is a waste as very often in the game enimies get into melee and your fighters should be in the front line with melee weapons, protecting the other party members who would still be using a ranged weapon.
This is just my opinion, and the style I favour.

 

It should be:

Khalid or Kivan
Coran
Minsc

Coran and Kivan are different classes. You can't compare them. Besides Coran has a worse sound set than KIvan.

 

You CAN compare them because where talking about their archer abilities

 

Coran is no doubt a better archer. Coran has 3 Prof. points spent towards bows, which Kivan can't do and Coran shouldn't be able to have because he is multi-classsed but since he is a NPC, i guess rules can be broken by the Creator's when a game is made.

 

I think that you're mistaken Egg, khalid should be a little lower on the list, and unless NPC's are the same class it is a little unfair to compare them unless it is an ability that both can excell in.
Besides I've noticed in BG that every so often you have to take their STR stat into consideration as well.

OK, here is a pt-to-pt analysis of their archery skills:
1. Coran, Kivan and Khalid are all generic fighters, whether single or multi-classed, so you can discount their starting THAC0 since it would be the same. Nightal, I don't think being a ranger is an advantage over being a fighter class.
2. Race-wise, Coran and Kivan both gain a +1 to bows since both are full-blood elves. So, too bad, Khalid .
3. Assuming Coran has 2* in his Bow prof (Wingfoot: in my game, he has 3* in Large Sw, and not in Bow; at what level did he join your party?), Khalid would gain a +2 in to hit and damage abilities over both Coran and Kivan due to his prof points.
ie, Coran -- +1, Kivan -- +1, Khalid -- +3
4. In terms of missile atts. Dex modifiers, Coran has the highest (+3), Kivan (+2), while Khalid has the lowest (+1).

So to sum up, in terms of to-hit capbility:
Coran -- +5, Kivan -- +4, Khalid -- +3

Btw, Str has no bearing on the accuracy (ie to-hit modifiers), nor (I think) the damage inflicted by missile wpns.
