Seeing Khalid on that table was one of the highlights of the game for me. I just wonder how they found his corpse from BG ;).

[IMG] Yes Drako the punch was aimed at monk players like you (yes I'm jellous; I barely beat the iron gollem at my first quest (Nalia) and now (3rd quest) when I came to the temple dragon (shadow I think) I cowardly left him alone)
(btw: I'm just starting a monk in parralell to my first char (sorcerer)).

What I mean is a man killing a huge monster with one punch is absurd.
So when plaing RPGs you have to accept certain unnatural things as natual within the game.
And the power of area spells, ranged attacks, certain equipmend and certain spells just happens to be extremely high.
I don't have cloud-kill in BGII but when i got poison cloud in BGI I (with Dynaheir an gnolls castle) I used it extensively for a while (e.g. in the spiders cave).
(It seemd that AI was higher in the Dark side expansion than it is in BGII (groups of monsters spread randomly when attacked and one of them was bound to see you, then they either all charged or tried to lure you forwards.)
So accepting the realities of BGII, if a monster is powerful and dumb, why not kill it in an intelligent way.

Palpatine: it was just starting characters with nonmagical weapons. Later though he was reduced to chunks of flesh as i just imported characters to play through the game again.
Although last ime i played it i sent him 'scouting'. As he was scouting he had to be quiet, so no weapons or armour incase they made a noise and sacrificed him to hobgoblins for a change. Usually it was Ankhegs or, my personal favourite, the party would sacrifice him to Shar for her favour. :D
Hey maybe we could do a new post in the BG forum, your favourite way to kill off Khalid (or any other annoying character) :D

OK, i had to put the post in the BG forum, share your methods there ;)

Alright people, This is a Game, YES Baldurs Gate is a game, its what the Creators made it to be and nothing can be changed. Whatever exists in one gaming universe doesn't exist in another. Whatever power in this game you can hold, you can use..it was made that way. If the "Creators" put a spell that can vanquish ur enemies in one throw, then do it!, it exists, theirs nothing cowardice about it. Its like saying "NOOO!! NOOO! don't use the powerful solar laser gun against the Giant,...*ahem* here's a Sword go get him, ...Oh yeah! that sword can shoot fireballs...*that ain't gonna help, but at least u died in Honor! or whatever that is...."

    Another example, Starsiege: Tribes.

"I hate those godamn chainers, snipers, mortar spammers, campers, Air Shooters!"

    All part of the game..

The Cloud Kill spell can be utilised in a melee battle. In Icewind Dale, my party was often rushed by a swarm as soon as I stepped into an area. Let the enemy charge hit your line of fighters and then cast the Cloud Kill spell so that it does not touch your party members but hurts the enemy. With a little practice, this technique is easily mastered. Also, in magical duels, a quick cloud kill before you and the enemy mage start dispelling each other's spell shields and breaking out the Horrid wiltings gives you an advantage. The enemy mage is now obliged to maintain his globe of invulnerability or risk perpetual spell disruption. Who says Cloud Kill can only be used cheaply?

Ok, first things first Sorl- get my name right! Drako?... Now let's move back to your responding post. Sorl, are you recognizing the 'FANTASY' aspects of the BG2 game. Everything in AD&D has a magical AND fantasy themes attached to it. Dragons are magical creatures, and therefore 'he who lives by magic can die by magic'... And 'he who lives by the sword lives a gooood loooooong time!' - Minsc & Boo addition there. :)

Anyway why are you thinking it's just a 'man' that is killing a Dragon with some... 'punch'. Each class & race in the AD&D realm is far beyond our real world human 'man' and shouldn't be viewed by the 'man vs. huge monster' argument. It's a FANTASY realm here in this AD&D/BG2 land where everything has magic attached to it. Which includes ALL classes and races found therein. The Dragon in the 'Lord of the Rings trilogy'... downed by ONE 'magic arrow' by -A MAN. Drizzt -a Drow ELF can down a Dragon as well as MANY other legendary Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms heroes. The MONK (btw it's not a punch Sorl...) 'quivering palm' attack is also magical. It uses the ultimate magical KAI power available that can be tapped into and releases it upon contact with a creature.

It's already been addressed in many emails about Dragons in BG2 but I'll expand a little on the subject as well. The designers did a 'fair' job with Dragons in BG2, but there is no real 'depth' of the 'Dragon' found in the game. In the Pencil/Paper version there is depth and variety of Dragonkind (from many cultures). Anyone who has not played AD&D in that format will only 'comprehend' Dragons from what they see in 'a movie' or 'picked up on' in some book. Which leaves them with a limited comprehension of what Dragons are and therefore cannot understand how they can be defeated in the BG2 arena. Future releases will no doubt reflect more depth of Dragons and we may find that many will be UNDEFEATABLE by any character that we play, and can only be beaten by 'specific' demihumans or gods.

The power of Kung Fu can never be under-estimated as the strength of humans towers far above that of any dragon or demons.

[IMG] Sorry about the name Draco!

(By now I'm allmost out of Irenicus dungeon with my monk an I got far less hurt than my sorcerer did)

But I like to play the spell wielding guys and my sorc's current AC + THAC0 just about give his intelligence (and thats not negative), hit points are just barely higher. My parties tend to have only one real fighter, so us little 'casters got problems doing sheer brutal attacs (we all can't really wield them swords lying around (havn't found that +3 -10AC -10THACO +lots protection dagger yet), can't wear good armor and when we hit, who cares).
In short, if you don't have lots of tanks in your party, you need good spells, and not getting hurt has big priority.
You just fight differently; a mage is just as proud of a good kill with a spell as a fighter is with the mighty mystical punch.
The risc of the mage/priest heavy group may not lie in the final battle with the one big shot, but getting there through lots of ambushes.
We nearly got rubbed out by that vamp attack on the docks (I twice just barely ecscaped the cloaked mages so I nkew better than use magic with an endless flight path).

    May the brain prevail!
