Chiaroscuro is an italian term which literally means 'light-dark'. In painting it refers to dramatic tonal contrast to depict a form.

That empty canvas has been stapled to the wall for 3 days now. I didn't know what was going on it but I knew it is time to start painting again. Stretching a canvas is a process that involves putting staples at opposite angles to remove the creases in the fabric. As you work to stretch the canvas you have to remove the previous staples periodically to re-stretch each side until it is ready. One of the staples I removed poked me in the finger and produced a drop of blood. I guess that was the first colour that went into this piece.

When I am painting I don't look at pieces. Two eyes, a nose a mouth - that is not what makes a face. I look at light and shadow. Colour is not what you see but what makes the form. I don't go searching through my box of paint looking for beige and brown. I usually grab yellow and a blue or green to start - sometimes red.

This morning it was yellow, blue and white. The image has a lot of shadows so I started with the blue. Sensuous lips, a crease between hooded eyes ,a line across the forehead. Expression of gears that turn the mind. Masculine jaw and angled cheek. I paint very fast. Is my way of dealing with my thoughts. The brush always shows me what I hide from myself.

I took a few minutes to come and write this down. It's good to walk away when you are making something so that you have a fresher eye when you come back to it. My passion is in my paint. This one is private so I won't be showing it here.

So was it still there when you came back or did it get up and walk off the canvas? ;)

    Sounds pretty detailed and life-like.

I'm not so sure how life-like my paintings are I only seem to see in light and shadows :D.

It's a painting of someone who just flew into my life.
