[IMG] Weapon finesse only applies to small or tiny weapons. If you're planning on using long swords, forget about it.

You could improve your chances to hit if you use a magical long sword in the main hand, and a small blade on the other hand. If you had Weapon Finesse, it should only apply to the smaller offhand weapon.

You'll be able to seriously upgrade your sword with Marrok the moment you get a diamond (do so, for goodness sake!), and then find or purchase more +1 swords in Chapter 2. I remember a magical long sword with extra acid damage in Chapter 2, but the name escapes me now.

thanks, i had the diamond already. was only waiting for the long sword. do other merchants sell long swords +1? i have another diamond so i could dual-wield 2 astral long-swords? i don't want to put a different weapon in my off hand because it seems like a waste of the 2 fighter levels i did just to get specialization in long sword.. :/ still waiting for a gargoyle skull so i can get that leather whitebone armor. that armor counts as light, yes? i don't want to lose my 2-weapon ranger bonuses by putting on medium or heavy armor..

No, IIRC, for the whitebone armor you need leather, but the end result is heavy armor. So, not very useful for a dualwielding ranger.

Anyhow, dualwielding is overrated IMO, you'd be much better wearing heavy armor and a shield.

oh. damn. does marrok make any lgiht armors?

yeah, but i've put in too much time already just to stop and restart with a new character.. guess i'll implement all these suggestions with my next char.

No, Marrok doesn't craft any light armours. And Whitebone Armour was really a pain, I got into the same predicament once. Built a DEX-base dual-wield ranger and worked really hard to get that armour only to realized it's not suited for my character.

Iirc, Marrok will only craft once of each item in his list. Example, if you already had him craft the astral blade, he will not craft another astral blade for you. But I have yet to try not having the first blade in my inventory.

You can buy +1 weapons at the merchant in the Docks district.

Good weapons are kind'a hard to get in OC when you are level 1-12. Marrok's list seems to be the best bet during those levels.

Right, I followed everyone's advice and decided to get SoU. So I checked the new character screen to see what prestige classes there are but I only see a few:

    arcane archer
    blakcguard
    assassin
    shadowdancer
    harper scout

what happened to the others that i always see in previous threads? weaponmaster, dragon disciple, etc.?

That sucks, I can't find a copy

anyway, I started over. I'm intending to create a blackguard that specializes in great swords. here's my char so far, i've just finished the academy quests and just hit level 3.

    str: 16
    dex: 10
    con: 14
    int: 10
    wis:10
    cha:14

I started with a Ranger1 to get 4 levels of hide immediately (lacking only one more) and chose humans as a racial enemy and the luck of heroes feat (was this a good choice? it was a level1-only).

At my 1st level up I chose fighter and took weapon focus: greatsword.

at my 2nd level up I chose both power attack and cleave.

iirc, at my next level up i can already add a 5th rank to hide and qualify for a shift to blackguard. i also intend to get weapon specialization: greatsword.

any comments or suggestions about my choice of weapon, feats or racial enemy?

Oh..sorry, I didn't see the part about no expansions...alright then, play a Sorcerer!! Of course, you won't have IGMS and all...but you still have Time Stop and Wail of the Banshee...and Negative Energy Burst...and heaps of other great spells.

Greatsword is pretty much a good choice for a strength-based fighter class. Try to get the Harbringer from Marrok. You can get adamantite by killing Loxar and a greatsword +1 from the merchant in the Dock District.

If you have Weapon Focus: Greatsword then you'll find +1 examples more often. For example, in the bottom of the prison in the Peninsula district.

Yeah, already got it from that exact site mags. quick question: at what fighter/character level do you get weapon specialization? and what are the pre-requisites for improved criticals?

because iirc i got weapon specialization on my 2nd fighter level at 5th character level (Barbarian3 then Fighter2) but now I've got Ranger2 and Fighter3 and it's not available  do i have to take a 4th level just to get it? or am i wrong and do i get it on my 6th character level?

Pre-requisites for Improved Critical are a BAB of +9.
Prerequisite for Weapon Specialization is Weapon Focus in required weapon, as well as 4 Fighter levels and BAB +3...not sure about the BAB part, but the fighter levels and Weapon Focus are locked in stone.

ok, i now have 4 levels of fighter and 2 of ranger. i've also fulfilled the blackguard pre-requisites of 5 in hide, evil alignment and have the cleave feat. in my next (8th) level up, can i take a blackguard level already?

IIRC, Blackguard requires +6 BAB, so you should be good to go.

If you don't like buffing then why Ranger? You could have stuck with Fighter/Barb and left Wisdom at 8. Six Fighter levels would have been enough to get Longsword Weapon Spec and the dual wield feats.

Skill points in Discipline and Lore are a waste. Discipline is not needed as not one single enemy will attempt to disarm you. Dragons, on rare occassions, will attempt a knockdown but there are items that make you immune to knockdown. Lore? You'll become so rich that the 100 gold fee for a merchant to ID something is but a pittance. And then there's Lore potions...

You can dual-wield longswords without any problems. Yes, there's a penalty but the OC is so easy, and the equipment you'll find so uber, that it won't ever be an issue. Heck, you could dual wield without even the feats and still score hits most of the time.

I'd suggest an item that makes you immune to Mind Spells. That way you can hack away without fear (literally) and without any need for buffs.

hmm, damn I'll just have to incorporate these changes in my next character i guess.

i'm now a ranger2/fighter4/blackguard1. i took the ranger levels so that i could get the skill points in hide immediately and get more hit points during level-ups.

wasted my skill points unfortunately. put them all in lore and discipline..

is improved criticals a fighter-only feat? or can i get it eventually with a blackguard.

Anyone can take Improved Critical, I was under the impression that it was +8 AB though. I could well be wrong.

Do you have Weapon Specialisation yet? If not, then you have to level up as a fighter when getting a feat as I'm pretty sure that the way it was put in means that you can only take it on Fighter level ups.

Sir Fink is right about getting immunity to Mind Spells. With the classes you are taking, your Will saves will be rather weak.
