I've got a weird variant of a problem I've seen before.
Sometimes when optical drives, whether CD or DVD-ROM/R/RW get a couple years old they have trouble opening the trays, necessitating using a paper clip. Sometimes this fixes it temporarily, sometimes you have to do it almost every time.

However, I just had an odd variant I've never seen before. The tray on the bottom CD/DVD-RW on my Win7 computer will not open if I push the button. I hear it try to open, but refuses. However, it does succeed in opening 99% of the time if I right-click on the icon for it and choose "eject", even if there is nothing to eject.

What's the difference between hitting the button on the front and ordering the computer to eject? I've never seen that bit of weirdness. Why would it succeed in opening the tray by having the computer do it?

Of course, it could be coincidence, but I was wondering if anybody else had seen a malfunction like this? I've seen them be reluctant to open by any means except the manual paperclip many times, but not one method over the other.
It's NOT the button, because I hear the eject/opening mechanism make noise.

The button could be registering as a double press, so opening and closing at the same time.
