Hey guys and girls I have a pretty big problem with my laptop. The DVD/CD-ROM drive isnt working correctly.

Well, it can open so I can put a cd in and close then open again so I can get it out. However no CD-Rom drive is shown to be recognised in My Computer. I also had a look in device manager and under Device Manager, it had the properties for the device and it says:

    "Manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM drives)

    Location: Location 1(1)

Device Status: Windows succesfully loaded the device driver for this hardware device. (Code 41)"

I also had a look in my hard disk PROPERTIES, then HARDWARE. It says under "All disk drives"

    NAME
    COMPAL TSD80YI DVD RW

    Type
    DVD/CD-R...

It also lists the hard disk but I dont think that is needed just now.

Any ideas how to rectify this cause I honestly don't know how it happened. I just inserted a cd and it suddenly wasn't reading them anymore and I found thant Windows coudn't find it.

    HELP ME!!!

[IMG] What is the exact Operating System, and do you mean the CD isn't recognized, the CD-ROM *DRIVE* isn't recognized, or something else?

Do you still have the *drive* under My Computer?

My computer has Windows XP and as I'm sure I said above it is the ACTUAL DRIVE. There is no icon in "My Computer" displaying the DVD/CD Rom Drive.

Does changing the drive letter in (right-click) My Computer -> Manage -> Storage -> Disk Management fix the problem?

Maybe it is wiring. Was the notebook dropped or placed down a little harder than normal? That could cause some damage to your drive.

Is this a new drive? Could be in your BIOS. I once had to go into the BIOS and change it so it would rcognize my CD/Rom drive on my Dell laptop.

I had this problem once on my laptop. I just took the little screw holding my drive in, pushed the little 'lever' to slide it out, and I used an alcohol swab to clean off the contacts. When I slid it back in, I went in to the BIOS and had it preform a full POST run, and when it finished booting up, the drive showed up just fine.

I don't know if it was a bad connection, of if the in-depth POST fond/fixed the problem, but it worked for me, it might work for you. Plus, it's always good to clean thing out every once in awhile. :thumb: :rolling:
