    I happened upon my Unearthed Arcana last night and looked at Cavalier....

    Cavalier was it's own class -- with Paladin a subclass of Cavalier. The Cavalier was required to come from nobility (and Paladin for that matter) otherwise they would be required to be a squire of sorts, starting at -1,500 XP (with 1d6). They would be accepted into the Cavalier class at 0 XP. These guys were the ultimate fighters on horseback and gained bonuses to hit and damage with horseman weapons (mace, lance, sword, etc).

    It was an interesting class.

    Aye. Especially the -1500 to 0 XP period would have been a nice roleplaying opportunity. The stat requirements were steep, weren't they? 15 in every physical stat to be a Cavalier, then 17 CHA and 13 WIS for the Paladin subclass. That's 75 + INT and I doubt that one would normally go below 10 anyway. One needed a lucky roll.

    We used to house-rule that if you really wanted to play a certain class, you could bump a low stat up to the class minimum. :)

    What made those guys great though was how the stats got higher every level!

    No, they didn't. Those are bonuses to hit that are getting bigger, not stats.
