Well, it's a condition you can suffer from due to various spells. You normally don't "blind yourself". But I guess it would work to cast the 1st level wizard spell "Blindness" on the thief...? (But then why not cast (Imp.)Invisibility?)

If you blind your thief with the 1st level spell Blindness, you can then sneak up on an enemy (strange sentence that...) and backstab them, run away 2 feet, hide and then sneak up and backstab again. The enemy can see you all the time, but yet you have backstabbed twice or multiple times.

In case of two consecutive backstabs you'd better just equip a ring of invisibitily (or two if you want three backstabs). First Hide far enough away from the enemy. Then backstab and use ring. repeat as necessary. Plus with the boots of speed you can outrun almost any enemy so then it's easier: Hide, backstab, run far enough away (works good in closed areas), Hide and repeat these steps as necessary. Cleared the Illitith City with just one Stalker this way.

you have to use a melee weapon allowed to a thief, (I suggest you the "Celestial Fury" +3 Katana, the best in the game) and be invisible or hidden in shadows. You also have to attack the enemy from behind. Fighter-thieves are best suited for this role since they have a fighter's THACO and can specialise multiple times in any weapon. There is a short sword specially suited for backstabbing as well, if you can't find the katana or don´t use it.

On a note with the staff of the magi, you can not backstab with the staff simply because it would make it far too powerful in the hands of a mage/thief (i.e. unlimited backstabs).

That blinding your thief thing is a bug and shame on you for using it!

Not really -- the Short Sword of Backstabbing has no special abilities that make it any better for backstabbing, it's just a vanilla +x weapon.
