Brain teaser

No it wouldn't. If it would work somewhere else than the north pole it would work everywhere else. Or am I missing your point?

The point you are missing is that there are only 2 parallels that have a length of 1 mile: One very near the north pole and one very near the south pole.

Which is basically what I asked:
But BTA you're right there's one near the north pole too - so does this thing have three solutions? (I don't mean bear colour I mean the geographical position).

Actually there are quite a few geographical locations that work using your "1 mile north of a 1 mile long parallel" solution.

As far as the northern hemisphere 1 mile long parallel, I don't know if it's possible to walk a mile south and not always be past it, and I don't feel like doing the math to see.

Nomatter where you are on the southern hemisphere moving south then east then north will get you further apart than one mile. Just as moving south then east then north will get you closer than one mile to your base on the northern hemisphere. It is the nature of navigating with a compas on this spheroid "Earth". You can argue otherwise untill you are drop dead. I wont agree. :)

If this is in fact a new problem, then please make it more detailed than in your "quote".

If you walk east (or west) any multiple of 1 mile on a 1 mile long parallel, you will walk completely around the earth (perhaps several times depending on the multiple :) )and end up where you started.

Edit; what hurts the most banging your head on a concrete wall or squize it in cramp? I have both at my disposal...

despite the forest and the deer, i think most of you did enjoy the little puzzle. personally, i didn't get it when i first tackle it.

the solution has something to do with the fact that the world is "spherical" and that the compass always points to north.

1 mile south, 1 mile east/west, 1 mile north = where you started (for north pole)
1 mile north, 1 mile east/west, 1 mile south = where you started (for south pole)

according to reader's digest, this is where i got it (can't remember the issue but probably 6 or 7 years ago), north pole & south pole are the only places on earth that have that kind "triangular coordinate" characteristics.

    slith,

yeah, you are right. a polar bear's hair is indeed colorless. but the reflection of light on these colorless hair made it look white and sometimes yellowish. and that made white the generally accepted color of these bears. but come to think of it white is also not considered a color (if you know what i mean).

btw, glad to know you know about the polar bear. :)
