[IMG] A couple of things...there may be more references but..
When Baldurs Gate 1 starts upit has a quote from one Friedrich Nietzsche.
Nietzsche is in fact a 19th century German philosopher.
Conversely, the duergar leader in the first dungeon in Baldurs Gate 2...is named Ilych,
is this a reference to the Marxist theorist Vladimir Ilych Lenin??
Any other History or philosophical references you guys have picked up on?

Talos was the name of a mythical iron giant, who was guarding the shores of Crete.

Slight side note - Talos, described in the Book of Vile Darkness, a 3E D&D book, Talos is a big Iron Golem. Talos in Forgotten Realms wasn't the creation of Black Isle.

[IMG] Planescape: Torment is FILLED with stuff that is of philosophical/historical interest. Off the top of my head: The Sensates are based on a school of philosophical belief called 'Empiricism'. This is basically the belief that 'true knowledge' (i.e. what is objectively 'real' and 'true' in existence) can only be attained through the senses and sensory experience, as opposed to the 'Rationalist' belief that it can only be attained through the mind, outside of the senses. The main foundation for the beliefs of the Godsmen is the Hindu/Buddhist idea of reincarnation, while their idea of the 'divine force' is taken from the Stoic philosophy of ancient Rome. There is so, soooo much more in this game, but I can't really think of anything right now. I'll post anything interesting I can remember later.

I really recommend that anyone who likes PS:T should read up on Western philosophy, as it really provides some amazing insights into the game world.

Another one from Planescape Torment. There is a NPC called Phineas Lort. In greek mythology Phineas was the name of the blind clairvoyant, who told Jason how to go to Colhid.
