I have not really played many FPS but my favourite would have to be Dark Forces.

Half-Life 2 is unquestionably the best I've played.

Deus Ex and System Shock 2 are good, and both are quite unique as well. SS 2 is at turns frightening and disturbing.

Alien vs. Predator 2 is the scariest FPS I've played (yes, more so than System Shock 2; haven't played FEAR, since my rig can't run it).

Jedi Knight II and Jedi Academy are great fun.

Call of Duty...damn. Total immersion in the American and Russian campaigns. Not so much in the Brit campaign, since it's waaaay too much like Medal of Honor (read: inferior).

Not just the voice acting; the story/writing were just as bad.

The gameplay was pretty good, though.

    Call of Duty 2 multiplayer.

It's not a great game. It's decent. Graphics are unoptimised for online play ( people need good gfx's for decent frames per second) the element of luck is far too great (to the point of rewarding spray over skill) and hitboxes are REALLY screwed up.

On the other hand, it's second only to counterstrike (in the online FPS scene) if comparing the number of players. That makes it a highly competitive play, which is the most important element of an online competitive game IMO.

I play it a lot, i'm good at it, and there's no powerplaying here, just a person's skill and thinking. it barely matters if you play it for a month, or since it's release almost a year ago. As soon as you're familiar with the controls and it's tricks, you're set to go.

Can 'Thief' be considered an FPS?

Vampire the Masquerade? Not really a FPS, but it is 1st Person and you do get to shoot things...

    Deuse-ex 1&2 are also great.

    Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Why? Because its free, is extremely fun, and has so many mod maps that it never gets old.

Im surprised nobody has mentioned Battlefield 2 yet, excellent graphics, physics and guns and with a team of experienced players the team/squad play can be fantastic. Although it does leave a lot to be desired in single player.

    KotOR? :shake:

Seriously, I liked Duke Nukem 3D in the old times and I pwned in half-life multiplayer. There was that funny Duke-engine-based game called Redneck Rampage, too. Mortyr was nice to play, doubt you know.

Unreal Tournament (for pure multiplayer exhilaration) and System Shock 2 (for best single player FPS).

The orginal Half Life is still the best FPS. It's still a better story than HL2, with that odd, wicked sense of humor. HL2 was essentially a dull, humorless story, wrapped with a lot of great eye candy, with some OK game play. SS2 was a great game, but it seems to be more of an RPG than a FPS, IMO.

What Chandos said. Half-Life did have a better story line, punctuated by flash apperances by the G-Man.

The Magister: you do realise that the G-man makes plenty of appearances in Halflife 2 as well?

The best single player FPS would be Deus Ex for me. Simply love that game.

Best multiplayer is Red Faction. Nothing else I've tried is as much fun as this game. Though I don't care much for multiplayer, I prefer a good single player experience.

@ henkie: Yes I do. But the first time you play the game through he adds a sense of mistery while in Half-Life 2 you know he is just keeping an eye on you.
