After having just completed SoA, I think the best class...apart from the obvious what you'd have most fun with...depends on whether it's intended to go it alone or have a party accompany you.
If you are gonna have a 6 person party, I don't see any point at all in having a fighter as your main character, because of the number of NPCs you can pick up...Korgan, Minsc, Keldorn, Anomen and Haer'Dalis, Mazzy, Valygar....all tough in melee. Hence as the main PC I'll go for a straight-up mage...no kits, no glitz, no glamour...give him a girdle, a robe of vecna and a staff of magi and he's one tough cookie! Time Stop-Abi Dazim anyone? ;)
Magic wise...okay so there's Imoen, Jan, Jaheira, Cernd, Viconia and Edwin...not a fantastic selection...especially if you take a mage from the very start. Having said all that, if someone wants to try the game with just their PC and no party...it'll probably have to be a fighter/thief/mage for flexibility. At least IMHO. :)

I'm all for the goodie-goodie two shoes with my paladin.
I fight in the name of justice, spit in the face of evil, and for some reason I can sleep w/ Viconia or Phaere without becoming a fallen paladin...

  6. Tasohan,I agree with you.But I think it is better if people play their own class because I think everyone have their own ability to play.

    I,myself,cannot play as paladin,bard,or barbarian.But I like to be a druid,mage,thief,or cleric.

Don't be angry with me I just say my opinion.

Assassins rule. Mine is presently a chaotic neutral dungeon-crawling specialist. (Like Ragusa said earlier in this post, it's all just a matter of roleplaying).
Sneaky-pete assassination only when called for. Picking pockets is for lowlifes (and those theives working for my guild). We will not deal in the slave trades, btw.
Just enough melee-ing skills to keep him on his toes, and that poisoned blade with x4 backstab damage - booyah!

My next trip through BG2 will likely be as a sorceror or possible F/M/T. Stay tuned.

I like to play the Skald for RPG reasons. It is the closest to me as a person:
    - I'm a decent musician
    - I'm a decent fighter
    - I'm a decent (magician?) with some insight
    - like to hang back and egg on the front lines
    - can be dangerous in a pinch

I don't guess the PC has to be the strongest character possible. I'd rather play it as if I was there. My favorite other classes:
    - dwarf fighter/cleric with dual hammers
    - gnome Illusionist/thief

    Just my $.02.

Much as I hate go follow the herd, I must concur - the 'best' (or worst) class is what you make it, and how you play.

As for myself, I've played through from BGI to ToB as an Elven Enchanter. If you're a wizard-lover, it's a real challenge to play WITHOUT the Evocation/Invocation circle, because they're most of the attacking spells. It certainly tests one's resourcefulness!

However, emulating yourself can also be fun, and for that I can't get past an Elven (or halfling) Swashbuckler. I love thieves, and they reflect the real me, but I've always had something against backstabbing since I killed Sarevok in two blows (solo) during BGI. It's just so.... dishonourable!

No, Ragusa is the guilty party here. He hacked that hafling paladin of his. You are right, legally only humans can be paladins in 2nd edition D&D.

  12. Paladin. Always played with that. And screwed up. Now is an Barbarian female human called Rhynn Ness. Dont call her girly, if you dont want to find yourself fighting with a nastier opponent then Firkraag. Just thought up extra history.(like dragon blood, when gets ANGRY changes into monster. Grows wings, claws, spikey tail and fire breathing ability)

Mhmm. Imo, there is no BEST class, since each has his own area's of expertise...

In the fun catagory however, my vote goes out to: dwarven barbarian or a ranger/cleric.

Everyone here has been right in what people have said. If someone gets the most fun out of the role playing aspect then pick the class that best suits them, more power to them. BGII is a fantastic game and there's so much scope for different ways to approach it.
What us *magic* pushers were saying though, is that if you wanna get through the game with a balanced and decent party, that can tackle pretty much anything, choosing a fighter/ranger paladin for your main char isn't that great because of the amount of fighting NPCs you can have join the party. The magic weilding NPCs are pretty weak, and the Viconia and Edwin, the only two single classed magic using NPCs both walk off if rep gets too high. Instead of making a paladin, take Keldorn, take the mage! Instead of a fighter, take Korgan, and choose Minsc over a ranger PC. Then get a mage who can cast level 9 spells (depending on how many athkatle sub quests were done) at around the time you get to the underdark.

    As we all said:
It's Role Playing Game, not Easy Playing Game!
Take what you suits best and have fun.
    No thrill is no fun.
