What a bunch of morons. They are supposed to enter the smartphone market, too... I'll make sure to pass the word to avoid DELL phones like one's life depends on it.

Also, HP D530 (IIRC) had the same problems. AVOID "cookie cutter" PCs like your VERY EXISTENCE depends on it. Gateway are no better.

I'd rather build my own PC. I built my X2 just like I did my Phenom, never had problems. I have no plans on changing that.

It was related to this but I've hard comments about Dell laptops seemingly being designed to fail 2 weeks after the warranty expires. I've been told by a woman whose laptop had something go wrong and others brought up that point to her.

One story I've heard of is that someone decided to respond by getting the best warranty he could and then throwing it down stairs and doing other damaging things to his laptop a week or 2 prior to the warranty's expiration date. This way he would get a new machine just before the old one was practically scheduled to have something go wrong.

I would just get a different type of computer from the get go but I find it hard to feel sympathy for a computer company that tries to give its customers bad equipment and screw them over.

Hey! I love my Dell Studio XPS laptop!

Granted, the OptiPlex line is completely garbage. I'm not saying that every Dell laptop/mini is good either. IMO, Dell should just stick to laptops and pour millions and millions of dollars into their laptop/mini R&D coffers. :thumb:

I've been a loyal Dell computer purchaser for around 10 years for my personal machines (I actually tend to stay away from them in my professional life). I've had, all in all, great experiences with my Dell's, and when there have been problems, I've gotten good support -- and with current warranties had parts quickly replaced. Oddly enough, I just called Dell about a fried graphics card yesterday, and am waiting for a tech to arrive and install it at my house any minute. Not bad. It's also odd that I'm reading this thread only a couple of hours after ordering a new Dell XPS system.

But as great as my experiences have been, this is really bad what's being revealed in the linked article. How can a company with the reputation of Dell afford to screw with it's customers, and it's credibility, in this way? At a minimum, I sincerely hope that there were some executive level jobs lost over this horrendous screw up on Dell's part.

Had I read this post prior to ordering the Dell would I have gone with another company? I guess I can't say for certain, but I had spec'd out a nice HP Pavillion machine for comparison that would have gotten me a somewhat faster processor for nearly equal value. I went with Dell mainly because I'm so comfortable with them. I'll certainly pay this incident mind before I buy another Dell system, so if nothing else, the damage to their reputation is there.

That said, I'm sure all PC manufacturers have their share of skeletons in their closet, but Dell got caught with its pants down.
