It is impossible to hide in shadows sucessfully when seen by an enemy - even with 250 points spent on this ability :( but finally therer are potions of invisibility ;)

[IMG] Hehe, my level-11 and str-12 gnomish illusionist-thief Svenia Svensson has recently dealt out *56* damage when backstabbing with a dagger (this +3 dagger from planar prison) on a critical hit :D !!! She just casted strength and had a potion of invisibility right after :) :spin: And the enemy was in fact an armed and armored human who was just as dead as the exploding goblin :D :p

OOOPs I just got so carried away killing evil druids in grove, that I saw a druid all on his own so ran up backstabed him for 80+ dammage :) . It was only when I looked at his items that I realised it was poor Cernd, being a chaotic good bounty hunter I reloaded as thought jah might get realy upset :p

My solo F/M/T backstabs a lot and it often lets him simply kill the oponent or at least seriously wound them. I've never had any of those problems with backstabbing, don't know why... The reason you couldn't backstab beholders, golems and so on is beacause they lack the vital organs and areas to strike at and therefor can't be backstabed. Hope this was of use.

    Cheers, Void

    Another quick backstab boast.

You know the circular globe with the six windows that you can save the boy with ...

With my solo f/m/t got each of the first 3 to appear, hide in shadows each time, one back stab each time and they died. I got about 40,000 xp for 3 back stabs!

I experienced a problem during backstabbing.

My 21th level assassin tried to backstab a mage with the cutthroat short sword and he failed again and again. I must say that his THAC0 is 1 and there was no critical miss, so he must have had to hit that puny mage. When I looked at the to hit rolls, I saw that my assasin didn't missed the target, he just left the shadows before he could make an attack. He was equipped with the boots of speed too, and I suppose the weapon's speed factor has been drastically decreased by that damn boot into a negative factor, so my character was unable to do a single backstab with that weapon. The same problem was present when backstabbing with the celestial fury too; but (fortunately) not with the fire tooth +3 throwing dagger(I don't know why but since it works every time who cares!). When my main char took off the boots of speed, his backstabbing accuracy went back to normal with all the mentioned weapons, killing everything in one hit..heh..heh...his max backstab damage was 224/critical hit of course/ with the fire tooth +3 dagger. Perhaps this is the best dagger in the whole game... THAC0 +3, 2d4+3 damage plus 1d2 fire damage, 2 attacks/round; can be used as throwing dagger too. I shall keep it through ToB I'm sure.

Did the mage in question have stoneskins cast? That would stop it as well wouldn't it?

No, no stoneskin. My assassin just left the shadows, and... there was no attack roll. I did not understand the whole thing.

Hey most of them druids had blue circles. They were just trying to lure me in before turning red :p . I simply didn't want to give them the chance anymore. Poor Cernd was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time (wrong place = in front of me with back turned :p )

    It is not only you.
In my second pass with F/M/T I haven't used it too.
Somehow I haven't needed it. In fact, I simply forgot about it. And I still finished the game.

It all depends on you what tactics you'll use, obviously.

True, for the most part my thief is used as an archer/trap finder so he doesnt spend much time hided in shadows. I might use it more if it worked like it does in 3E but oh well.

If you are a MC thief then you have other good abilities to use in combat, but in my case(I have a true class assassin) backstab is a must. The assassin has x7 backstab modifier and I would be a fool if I wouldn't use it...So I do!

I have yet to try backstabbing and I have gone through most of BG1, finished BG2, and working on ToB. My character is a MC mage/thief and I usually let the tanks take care of the badys, and he just lofts spells in. Each to his own I guess?

My human assassin (can't remember his exact level at the time, was around 18) did a 158 damage backstab (gotta love the seven multiplier plus crits) against some poor, unsuspecting creature using a Pixie Prick (1d4+3). His strength was at 20 and his dexterity was at 18.

My backstabbing isn't that effective, probably because of the THAC0. Does your THAC0 improve when backstabbing? In general, how many attacks can you make before leaving the shadows?
