This time, for my son. His Bar Mitzvah is Saturday and we are going to get him a desktop. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg (considering I'm already down an arm and a leg from the Bar Mitzvah, I would then have to change my name to Bob -- think swimming pool), but I don't want to get him a piece of crap either.

    I was thinking: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=83-227-261&ReviewNo=2125006

Looks reasonably priced without hamstringing the machine.

He doesn't do WOW or SC2 or any of that (he actually takes after me and likes BG, D2, etc.).

He'll need it for music, school, internet, etc.

For monitor, I figured I didn't need to go overboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009235

    Thoughts?

19" wide monitor? You're kidding, right? Try 22" instead, 19" on a wide is simply too small.

The budget parts layout I listed in the other thread is very much applicable here. Replace the GTX 460 with a GTS 450 for a more budget experience.

For another $30, this is probably a better choice.

Updating this, I actually wound up getting him this:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883103361

    and this:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009255

I paid about $20 or $30 less than the currently advertised price for them.

He is very happy, as am I -- they took less than 15 minutes to set up, no cords were loose or unplugged. No dead pixels in the monitor, and he's happy as a clam doing his thing and not taking up time on my machine or my wife's. A win all around and I think this machine will actually last him for a while.

http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ is the website for it. you should always run it on a brand new oem machine and get rid of the bloat and adware they have preinstalled and the trialware as well.

If you think that machine will last him... well, good luck with that.

I'm not gonna lie, it was a bad purchase. Hope you got the extra warranty. Acer systems have markedly horrible build quality.

Newegg will more than likely take care of DMC if he has an issue. There is a reason that Newegg has a very good reputation for customer service. I sold Acers years ago and had little trouble with them. But that was a long time ago, but still I don't know why they would be any worse than most other major retail brands, especially since a lot of them come out of the same plant these days.
