Ah, how the handle player deaths is always fun.

Often you'll have a DM who will not kill off any PCs, no matter how dumb they are. ["Uh. I charge the drow priestess with my staff of dwarf-smiting."]

Then there was the one DM I had who deliberately killed off people. The party was 1st level and turned the corner to find some umpteen-HD mega-orc. Must've beek Uruk-hai or something, because ofter killing most of us off, he picked up my halfling's body and threw it 20' at another character. Mysteriously, the only one who survived (and survived unscathed) was the DM's girlfriend. Yeah, I left the group after that game.

DM's need to make sure their low-level party runs into things they can handle -- unless they're just stupid. ["Push button to summonr fiend? Wonder what that does..."] And let them die if their rolls are miserable.

About the coal thing: I told it was magic, and when the full moon was shining on it and you looked at the coal, everything else you saw turned into gold when you say the name of the object, Than I told him that he couldn't look at the coal because that would blind him.

And the fool did trade it for the 6 horses!
