I certainly don't agree with marking, marginalizing or persecuting Muslims (or any group) and I'm not advocating that. I'm just saying that we should be wary. When dealing with fanatics you have have to have a different strategy. George Bush doesn't realize that, hence his blunders. I'm not saying that I have any answers, either. However, I do believe that Western culture is at stake here and that by being too "tolerant" (read complacent) we are simply playing into the radicals hands.

Yes, there is a threat to how our societies are being organized. But I feel the imminent dangers come from inside. Islamists - or even a radicalized Muslim world - cannot hope to destroy Europe at this point in time, let alone the US.

The threat comes from within. Hasnt the US only now officialy adopted a policy of torture?

It's a bit disconcerting to observe from afar. Hard to recognize these past years what I thought the US was all about.
While I would like to think the US isnt easily turned into a "Nazi nation" you are right: Complacency means playing into the hands of the wrong folks.

I dont know the answers. I only see how recent developments have royaly backfired, how the most small-minded issues here in Europe meant the loss of human life and riots on the other side of the planet.

Oh, I thought you were referring the the fact that we were apparently following Bush's anti-muslimness (as in, 39% of us ( )). Apparently not :p

That's not too bad if you put some perspective into it. Only 42% of the popular vote went to William Jefferson Clinton and *gasp* Abraham Cornelius Lincoln got just less (if I remember correctly).

You are kidding? Right? Then again you may be right - it has become a coporate welfare state. If you are a business, you can get anything you want from the government; if you are just a plain citizen, you get...DR's bologna hat....

"Fascism is possible although we are currently heading toward socialism."

Dinsdale, I don't think you need to worry. The US is practically light-years away from socialism or even social democracy. Chandos has a point there, but that "welfare club" was more the modus operandi in the anti-socialist juntas in Latin America. I hope Bush and co don't have any legacy pointing in this direction. As the recent news shows, all dictators - convicted or no, hated or loved - sooner or later die.

Psh. ImagonnabelikeTrump: when I'm fifty, I'll have a twenty year old wife. Oh yeah.

'Course, first I have to get rich. Hmm. Might be a problem.
