I have done some oversees traveling to Germany, England, and Saudi. I don't think that I ran into anyone over there who thought we (Americans) were all that stuck up and rude. For the most part we seemed to enjoy each others differences and we got along quite well.

It was actually a lot of fun, cause we enjoyed making fun of each other. The way we talked and our customs.

It is sad to think that TV and a few head leaders gave us a bad reputation like that.

 

Well, I never thought my education taught me that America was infallable and a global hero. I was 9 and 10 yrs old, learning foreign languages and living abroad, not with my family but with my *public* school. How's that for an educational field trip?

Also, I don't think elentary age students should recieve too sophisticated a view of hisory, not in terms of events but the whole political economy of those events, etc. Save that for high school and college. In an American university, you will get more anti-American sentiments than you ever would in another country!

 

That's why college universities kick ass. Wooooh! *topples over*

 

America is THE BEST country in the world and anyone who doesn't think so is simply too blinded by their own prejudice and bigotry.

Incidentally, Vandalore, it was Galileo who conclusively proved that two objects of differing weight fell at the same rate -- the Leaning Tower of Pisa demonstration.

actually, my some of my favorite parts of our history are when we got our asses pummeled, like in Vietnam. I think it wasn't our place to be there any way(the vietnamese feared the ROCK(south koreans) more than they feared us anyway.) I like looking at our major faults.

Now as for the "really stupid americans" point of veiw, yea, there are SOME really stupid americans over here. But really as a whole, we are a very intelectual county that just seems to have a bad(very bad) reputation from meaningles stuff like the simpsons. Our legal system is not bad at all. I don't see a problem with it. Some people (like Bill Gates) just complain that it is always trying to ruin them. also, i did not like either pesidential canidate this election. And i am from texas.

and not all of our universities are purly training to put people into wealthy situations. Take Texas A&M for example. Most of it's courses (or at least many of them) are for farming, ranching, etc. but it is also diversified with engineering coarses.

Personally, i have never seen an american with a grudge against the british, but have always seen british calling us yankees.(was originally a derogitory term)

well this concludes my 2cents for the day.

 

hmm i must disagree with the statement "America is the best country in the world."

For one Canada is the best country in the world. Not only are we similar to the states but we are better! We have higher taxes yes, but our medical is free, we have WAY more natural resources and we have better beer

if you mean lumber and fish, then yes, you do have more natural resorces. But i could think of better places to live, seeing as i like warm weather. (i hate the cold fronts from up there in the winter)

My bloke is half american and I get on well with his family, especially 'Mad Aunt Judy' who brunches with Rikki Lake and drinks like a fish (bless her)
The best things (IMHO) about America are the fact that everything is cheaper (CDs, Videos etc..) and the movie industry is better than most countries (not that the British one isn't picking up). My favourite bands are all American.
The worst things are that your President is (how can I put this nicely) 'special' and you like everything BIG..cars, buildings...large women in bikinis on Jerry Springer.
One thing that is important to me is that there is such a wide variety of people in America, you can really be yourself without being called a freak.
No country is perfect, and that's my penny's worth for today

well, some things are needed to be big. such as in texas, we need large SUV's to haul around things(like hunting blinds). We don't like people takeing our stuff, i dunno why, but we don't. Not every thing is big, like here in San Antonio(gees, i just keep getting more and more specific), none of the buildings are huge.(big, but not huge)

I love the simpsons, but they give us a bad image.

And yes our president is...um...retarded, yea, that's the word. Not all leaders would call some one an ass on national television with the mic still on.

 

Jack-of-All-Trades - have you ever been to Canada? Don't forget oil & gas & fresh water & coal. I think Canada is the best place in the world to live, work, raise a family, and take a vacation to. Sure it gets a little cold in the winter (here in Edmonton), but today we're sitting at 30 degrees C (not sure what it is in that goofy Farenheit system, maybe 90 F)

The cities here are generally small and not overcrowded, there are beautiful, unpopulated , wilderness areas. Pollution, yes it's a problem, but not so bad as other areas in the world. Kitiara is correct, our beer is better than US beer, but maybe not so good as some European beers.

 

Damn, I try to go to a chatroom and all I see is dumb american people blasting Canada!
Then we outsmart them with a witty comment, and they just say "Shut up" or "F@#k you!"
Not much of a good message, is it?
But living in Toronto, the Jerk Capital of the world (Next to NY, And my cousin lives in NY!) I have nothing to say. Our mayors dumber than your President, but on a whole our country has produced more smart people than most any other country in the world ( I think) I know its not right to see 1 person and say "Oh their whole country is like that"
But to see a whole league of jerks bashing us is sort of disheartening.

 

ok ok i just have to comment again...

Up here in canada we do not live in igloos nor do we have dogsleds.. actually where i live is off the pacific ocean and we are lucky if we see snow in the winter. Something i dont think the people in some of those states can say. I have heard NY winters are pretty cold.

Secondly, we have much better gun laws a big factor in my choice to never leave this country and raise my children here. We are much more liberal when it comes to soft drugs such as marijuana, i have no idea why you would send someone to jail for months and spend tax money to put them there just for smokin a joint!!

 

Why are people calling Bush dumb? At least he can say he took his HOME state in the elections! Not to mention his soaring approval ratings and stellar time in office so far.

 

For the record, Canadian beer is better than European beer or anyone else's beer. Our beer rules, and that's a fact. I am very patriotic about beer.

There's a great great movie called Canadian bacon that makes fun of perceptions of Americans and Canadians. In one scene Americans are shoving Canadians aside at a hockey game and the Canadians are apologizing politely in quasi-British accents. But the minute someone insults Canadian beer, all hell breaks loose and the Canadians go into berserker rage mode. I totally identify with this scene.

Canada isn't a major power and doesn't even try to accomplish much on the international level. It's a "home sweet home" place to live and, thank heavens, is downright boring in the history and international relations departments. But by God we make good beer.

 

Not only do we have the best beer in the world, we also have the only half-hour time zone in the world (three-and-a-half cheers for Newfoundland!)

ok, i never insulted canadian beer, gees, lil' over protective of that are you?

second, bush did win texas, but altered state tests so that he looked better(gave higher grades for no reason-thus increasing the pass/fail ratio)

next, i think japan has produced the more inteligent people than any other country.

further more, i like living in a city.

i think that 30 deg. C is like 65F. I hate the system also.(not possitive)

i know that you guys don't have (all) dogsleds, and almost no one lives in igloos, only a very small portion of the natives.
For that matter, we don't all drive broken down 58 FORDs (known here as "fix or repair daily")

 

um 30C is more like 90F!! big difference! And i do live in a city...LOL we do have those here as well

yes, i mean the big cities though, not to many of them up there. Toronto, Vancouver, etc.

how many cities are ove 1 million up there, not to many.

 

i am in Vancouver. Is the best of all worlds. You want snow, you go to the mountains, you want ocean.. only a block away. You want desert temperatures you go to the interior.. what ever you want we got it. Not to mention lots of untamed wilderness only an hour or two drive away.

Plus we do have a large population. And the pollution is very undercontrol.

 

sounds like a great place.

never actually seen much snow in my entire life... ah well.
