I want to underscore my previous point by referencing this article about a pervert who got pardoned (because of a lame ass liberal law, mind you, not because he was exonerated in any way) and what one of his high profile victims had to say.

I'm no expert in the field, and perhaps Kennedy doesn't have a degree in child psychotherapy, but his firsthand experience and subsequent experiences with other child victims means that his words carry a hell of a lot of weight with me.

When I first saw this article, I said "WTF?" but after reading it I had a Pratchett-esque thought. If a form of porn could be produced without using actual children -- using consenting, young looking adults, writing stories, drawing cartoons , whatever -- and it was proved that the existence of such filth was actually reducing the number of incidents of abuse against children, wouldn't that be a good thing overall? I mean, what parent among you wouldn't french kiss a goat to stop their child from being molested?

I still think the stuff is vile and disgusting, and I have a few thoughts on some better ways to deal with pedophiles (but they have rights, of course, what a crock of <snip>) but dammit, if it works, why not give it a try? I'd rather some whackjob get his rocks off on this stuff than on a living kid.

LKD - I think such stuff already DOES exist. I remember that there was a court case a while back addressing just such a thing. Specifically, the court case was regarding actresses who were at least 18, but who looked younger than that, staring in porno films where they stated in the film that they were younger than 18, and whether or not it was legal. IIRC, the ruling was that it was legal, because they really WERE over 18, even though they looked like and stated that they were 14, for example.

So it would appear that the porn market is ahead of you on this one. Of course, there is a limit to this. It may be possible to take an 18 year old and make her look 14, but it would be really hard to make her look 10. Although who knows? Maybe they can do something like they did for the hobbits in the LotR movies.

[IMG] Didn't Australia retaliate to this by trying to ban small breasts in porn? :D

If legalizing emulated child pornography satiates the market for it and prevents harm then it should be given serious thought. Though what would the side effects of such a change be? There's a risk that it opens up an avenue for easier access to communities where they can share other pornography that isn't faked, putting it into wider circulation and raising the demand for that too.

There wouldn't be a sure fire way to ensure no further harm comes of it. Which is the greatest hesitation.
