    Don't worry - of the three countries we're going to I'll be the most comfortably speaking out loud in England. I read a lot of British literature and love British 'telly,' so I think I'll be OK. Paris, we'll manage. But for Italy, I have absolutely no idea what to expect.

    However - I HAVE been reading several online articles about "how not to look like a schmuck American tourist in Europe" (or something to that effect). :) Very helpful.

    DR,
    no worries with Chartier and English speakers, of course they DO speak French, they owe it to themselves, nut they are patient, and used to tourists :D And no fear ordering something that sounds sort of cool. I did that a couple times. You'll probably get something you won't expect, but it will always be good ;)

    DR, Italians live in a self-contained bubble and generally don't speak English, so bring one of those translation gizmos.

    In my experience, from all foreign languages Italians tend to prefer learning (and to speak) french or spanish, since it is related with Italian, and thus easier to learn. Lazy buggers.
