[IMG] All the monsters in NWN also have portraits... And to remind you, so do all creatures in Torment.

It's a cool idea Tal, I definitely agree with it (not that I have much choice :hippy: ). Besides, now that I know there's no way I'll ever get Archangel Tyrael as my custom avatar (when I actually decide to GET a custom avatar!) I'd like to think I can get a cool pic for myself.
PS- That second picture for the human male is great! Nothing like an introspective warrior ready to hack some beastie into pieces.

/me wonders if we'll be allowed to send in our own portraits, working to the same size and colour restrictions of course. I guess the portraits will also need to be themed along the lines of the games covered. Slappy has lots of Slappy portraits fro example:

  6. OMG! I want to book this one in advance! The resemblance is incredibly uncanny! I never knew I had a twin! Wow!!

That's what I mean Z-Layrex. Allowing both portraits and avatars (ie having a wide selection to suit everyone's tastes) might motivate more people to apply for a custom avatar/portrait - ie donate money, order books and games trhough SP etc. Then again, it might be a slight aesthetic abomination.

One question: would there be any technical difficulties implementing both portraits and avatars on the site?

[IMG] Ok, let me go through this again in more detail. People seem to miss half of what I say in my posts lately. It's probably due to everyone staring at the portrait too much. :D

    1. The portraits would be from the games covered on SP, minus PoR only. If I allowed anyone to send in their own we'd just wind up totally out of style. But have no fear, if we put together portraits from all of the those games and expansions we'll wind up with more than 350 portraits (that's on top of my head). We only use 72 now, and most of them are inactive. When I implemented the portraits, the limit on still keeping one during inactiveness on the boards would be cut down to 2 months instead of six. In other words - we'd never run out of portraits.

    2. The regular avatars, i.e. not the custom ones, would still be kept for everyone WITHOUT a custom portrait. So all users who didn't contribute to the site in any of the ways listed as required for a custom avatar (portrait, from then on) would still have avatars instead of portraits.

    3. I would not let people have either custom avatars or portraits. That'd just generate confusion. All custom avatars would be replaced by custom portraits.

Originality is fine, but when many members who either donate to SP or buy something and thus help me keep this place running are women (who will rather not pick anything than a male avatar), I obviously have to remedy the situation.

any chance of custom portraits AND avatars? portraits are so, i don't know, common? i'm sure some people would prefer to keep their custom avatars.

personally, when i make enough money to donate to SP i'd prefer an avatar.

    I don't understand this...

People who have earned a custom avatar now have to change to a portrait...

And we can't have custom avatars and custom portraits because that will cause too much confusion...

Yet all those who haven't earned a custom avatar instantly get a normal avatar...

What's the difference between normal avatars floating about and custom avatars floating about?

Personally I want to keep my avatar, I don't want to change to a portrait and I think having the choice of custom avatars and custom portraits would be better than just having custom portraits...

There's no point in limiting people to just portraits if it's no extra cost for you to let them choose avatars too...

    No Herf. :p

First of all, this wont happen for a month or two considering how Tal is busy with exams and such like.

Secondly, regular users, i.e. those not with custom avatars at the moment will not get to select anything - the system for them will stay the same, or almost the same.

Those of us with custom avatars will eventually have to pick a portrait from one of the various Infinity (and Aurora ;)) engine games.

I know this sounds dappy, but its late at night and i have had to skip messages but ...

    1) How do we get the portraits?
    2) Does anyone who wants it get it?
    3) If not, who gets portraits
    4) Can we buy this er ... programme to make custome portraits
    5) Does the portrait have to be D&D based? or could you have something like er ... from Dragon Ball Z?
    6) Can we choose a potrait or are we just give one?
    7) Can i have one?

I like the idea, but you should either switch all the pictures(including the basic ones) or have the option for the people with the custom avathars to chose if they want to switch there picture.

But no matter what you do, It wont bother me as I come here for the information not the pictures.

One problem you might have with this change is newb asking why they dont a have a cool picture, but a avathar

[IMG] I agree with Slith's (ignored) opinion. While it might be confsing at first, it gives flavor and variation.

I feel having some people with avatars and some with potraits would make the boards incosistent and look messy. However, avatars are cool, and potraits too.

I propose we somehow give each member an avatar and a potrait. But that may make it rather cramped.

So maybe keep the avatar, but add a potrait at the botton of the message, like a signature, but only for those who have custom avatars.

And only potraits chosen from a list provided by Talutain from the various D&D based infinity engine games.

I believe that this is a great idea. If it comes with the freedom of choosing either an avatar or a portrait...

Tal ... as always, I support your decisions and will change from avatar to portrait without complaining.

A few things to keep in mind, just between us...

    1) I have started looking like my avatar ... so this is going to drastically change my life

    2) My commission freeze has been lifted, so I'll be hitting Amazon.com and Chips&Bits pretty heavily in the next months

    3) You are my favorite sorcerer in the whole cyber-universe

    4) We are brothers in Christ

    5) I'm bigger than you

*All things to consider when you finally give the portraits out and one happens to be prefect for this paladin/cleric . . . not that I'm looking for anything special ;) j/k
