The point is that you’re the exception rather than the rule. Most people overestimate their driving skills, and that is why speed limits seem low to them; the reality is that the limits are probably just about right. I doubt lawmakers would be willing to set separate limits for people who really know what they are doing. If you want to go a lot faster, a raceway is precisely where you should be doing it. And just so I don’t come across as too holier-than-thou, I regularly speed, but I limit it to 10km over (mainly because you won’t get a ticket here for that).

Here in Manitoba, the fine is $7.70 for every km over the speed limit, plus there are a bunch of admin fees tacked onto it. Going 30km over will cost you about $300.

 

That typically is going to get you a ticket though. I know several state troopers in different states (although admittedly none from Wisconsin). The general consensus from them is that nearly all police officers won't stop you if you're within 10 of the speed limit, and some of them will even let 15 mph over slide. But once you're more than 15 over, expect a ticket. Since you were 17 over, that exceeds even the more lenient range.

My top three would be:

1. Everyone thinks they are an above average driver.
2. Everyone thinks their kids are above average intelligence.
3. Everyone thinks their small children are cuter than most other children.

(EDIT: And yes, I'm guilty as charged with all three.)

Speeding tickets do provide something in regards to public safety. Parking tickets do not. You are not making the streets safer by giving someone a ticket because they didn't get back to thier car before the meter ran out. (Now, if you're double parked and blocking a road or something, that's different - I can understand a ticket it that case.)

I noticed a difference as I travelled through Illinois last month. There didn't seem to be any police on the freeway there. Plenty of places to pay a toll (which is part of why the idea of a toll highway is so unpopular in Wisconsin) but not much law enforcement other than that.

As to your story I would ask if the change in speed limit was well marked or not if. It was then you were speeding and an attempt was made to warn you. If not then I have a bit more sympathy as you could fairly claim to be caught by surprise.

 

It was on 26, about 5 miles? southwest of Johnson Creek/I-94. Was it a quick change? I don't know, it was my first time on that particular road and I will avoid it now. I do remeber seeing a 65 mph sign and didn't notice the change to 55, though the Statey told me I just passed one. I won't fault the cop in general, he probably knows if there was a sign or not. But the size or location I can't attest to. I even agree that was speeding according to the law as it is. I just think the amount of the fine is outrageous. Though it's been a while since I was ticketed for speeding, so who knows, maybe I don't realize the fines are jsut really getting that high. Funny thing is, I'm sure it won't change my driving habits one bit...

 

An $825 ticket would slow me down, I'll admit. Christ, that is fricking expensive! Hell, it makes it cheaper to go with a permanent driver.

 

A young woman was pulled over for speeding. A Texas State Trooper walked up to her car window, flipping open his ticket book.
