this isn't anything of real importance, but this really bothers me, I often notice when Yoshimo back stabs, he backstabs for 9 damage. I can't figure out mathematically how this is possible, first off, he's either doing x4 or x5 for his backstab multiplier, the damage range for his katana is 2-11, 3-12 with this strength modifier. Is there something I missed to let the game calculate out 9 points of damage for his backstab (3x4 should equal 12...)?

The target could have damage reduction. Also, Ding0 tweak has a component which lowers the backstab multiplier when using large weapons. You could have that installed as well. If you don't have Ding0 tweak, then it's probably damage reduction.

Backstab only works for weapons that are usable by a thief...which means IIRC Yoshimo's katana and Valygar's weapon do not work on backstab because they are only useable by specific character.

Simple test. Put a dagger in his hand and backstab a few times. If your damage comes out higher then you know it's his weapon.

it must be damage reduction, since Yoshimo's Katana has no problems launching itself up into the 40s with his backstab multiplier and my game is unmoded aside from Baldurdash. I think I've become too use to notifications about resistances (thank you IWD2).

Also another question, this one about trolls, are they immune to hold monster (hold person and animal as well for that matter but a troll shouldn't fall into that category)? Every time I've cast hold monster on a troll, it either makes it's spell save or nothing happens, as if regenerating, needing acid/fire to kill it, way high str and con aren't annoying enough (though I can nail Torgal with hold monster).

Backstab doesn't include all factors that increase damage. One of my characters who could backstab had x5, and her backstab damage always ended in a 4 or 9. Everything else was being multiplied, but something(s) that equalled 4 or 9 or 14 or whatever, wasn't be multiplied, only added.

Though in this case, considering the numbers, it must be damage reduction as everyone has said.
