I recently installed the level 40 patch, mainly because I use the game to try out interesting characters in interesting combinations, and the patch would allow me to make more powerful class mixes. However, I can't level up beyond level 34 (actually, ECL 34). Any ideas as to why this might be happening, and what I could do to fix it?

 

Have you reached godhood? i know this sounds dumb but i know somebody who installed a similar thing and while, in theory, she could get to level 40, her xp always hit godhood first

 

Yes, the character info screen says next level: godhood, but it did when I first installed the mod, and I leveled up after that, so I don't think there is a specific code in the game that makes "godhood" a limit.

 

^Is there a patch or mode to achieve more than lvl30? Where? Does it work really? It really helps MC chars (which I ma fond of) you know...

 

So, has anyone tried this patch yet? Is it any good? Does it work? Any incompatibilites with other mods (EoU, etc.)?

Update: Hmm...so, I've tried out the xp cap, and I'm having the same issue with it stopping at ECL 34. Has anyone else tried this out? The directions aren't very clear as to if I need to do some hex editing to change the maximum level to 40. If that's the case, I ain't messin' with it. Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm...I can never remember how to unzip those thingeys. I never know which directory name to put them in

 

I unzipped it into the same folder as the IWD2.exe (in my case "CProgram Files\Black Isle\Icewind Dale II").

There's a .txt document in the "source" folder that has some vague instructions, but doesn't really say if those steps have already been taken, or if you need to do them yourself. It would seem from the fact that ECL 34 is included at least *some* of the steps have been taken, and there are simply incorrect hex values, or something.

I don't know enough about hex editing to comment on that, though.

 

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The installation instructions are easy to follow. However, there's a file within the "source" folder called "iwd2xpcap "which contains several instructions for doing some hex editing. They way that document is written makes it sound (to me) as if some of this must be done on the user's end in order to gain the benefits of level 40 rules.

The main reason I'm thinking this is because it seems to be set to ECL 34, and not 40. That leads me to believe that either some values were entered incorrectly, or need to be entered by the end user.

As I said earlier though, I don't know much about hex editing, so I could be completely wrong. I'd be glad to take anyone's advice.

 

Does it really work without so many troubles? Then...then level 40 opens so many possibilities for multi-classing, and it can actually be worth playing IWD2 once again! With only 2 characters for extra fun? Along with mods of EoU, changed XP values for balance, and crazily random items? Level 40 means 20 levels of both mage and cleric! Sounds great!

Only, where were my CDs? Oh no! I remembered, my friend's cat had decided to 'taste' the great game IWD2 and left nasty teeth marks on BOTH CDs!

Oh well, I hope I can borrow it from my other friend? I don't have a cat afterall!

 

Yes, I've unpacked and installed it (and got the successful patch notice). However, instead of leveling up to 40, the upper limit seems to be 34. I've played around with varous classes/races to see if that made any difference, but everyone caps at ECL 34.

 

Have been using this mod for awhile but just today decided to download/install the java program needed to run near infinity so i could see if I could get get it to work properly.
What I found was that while it removes the cap it doesn't include a lvl 40 ruleset to allow you to actually gain levels to 40.Since SP (or nowhere that I know of for that matter) doesnt have a lvl 40 ruleset available for download,you would have to extend the tables in the 2da files yourself(with near infinity or some other program).
I extended the xplevel.2da tables by 10(from34 to 44),ran the game and the lvl cap was 40,ecl cap 43(deepgnome could get to 40).
Extending the featlvl.2da and lvlfeat.2da tables as well would probably make for a threadbare but usable ruleset,as long as you dont level any single class past 30.

I'd definitely download and use it! There are several classes that would make good 20/20 MCs, and while I could edit the .2da's myself, I don't know the 40th level rules well enough to do the editing. So, I would encourage you, TheMightySor, to send it in to SP. I know a lot of people would thank you!

 

I edited a bunch of files and submitted them to SP.Hopefully it will past quality standards and be included in the next site update so you can download it.

I dont know 3E rules too well either so I just tried to follow the progression that was already there when I could.

 

So, has there been any more info on when this update to the patch might be out?
