IGN has interviewed Robert Kimmel and Brian Rudnick, the writers of the film we're talking about. Here's a little tidbit:

IGN: How does this film tie in to the original Dungeons & Dragons?

Kimmel and Rudnick: It was originally meant to be a sequel. That's why it's set in Ismir and Damodar was brought back as the villain. During the development process a decision was made to have the story be less of a sequel and more of a self-contained adventure, like a module. This meant re-working the structure to remove the dramatic connections to the first movie. But there were certain elements from the original concept that we thought the fans of the first movie would appreciate seeing again, like Damodar. So, we had to figure out a way to justify Damodar's presence without making it a sequel.
The solution was to keep it in Ismir and have Damodar seek his revenge one hundred years later as one of the Undead, in this case a Corpse Creature. That's really the only tie-in to the original movie.

I think the SP interview beats the IGN one hands down. That asked some pretty stupid questions over there at IGN. Apart from the chunk of the interview that you posted here there really isn't anything interesting that they have to say - unless you really want to know whether they preferred Krull or Red Sonya.
