[IMG] Ok, i recently found out that when you're in the army in Sweden, the girls shower with you...
Man that's a little weird i think. I'll probably have look up at the ceiling the whole time.

[IMG] Something I have learnt from my 2 years in the army:

Women in the army...generally look like men.

Generally, I say. So no offense to anyone who might take it.

Yeah, from my experience as well, more often than not women in the army are, hmm... how shall I put this.. well, you got me, I think.
Never been in the swedish army, though, so things could be different there

Now that's bad. IMO, men and women should have separate showers. I definitely wouldn't like soe idiots staring at me, while I shower.

I hope it's not like that in Estonia.

Ameorn, someone is just fooling you. ;) I do not believe that any army would "dare" to break that propriety line just yet... In finnish military there are separate sleeping quarters and the women come to shower in different times (after men). As far as I know, the only time you actually see them is at breaks -if then ( 5 minute breaks, after which you must have packed and ready to go to the next "lesson")

@Ameorn: Perhaps you only know about a group of people of both sexes in Swedish who didn't mind showering together?

Well, I suppose the Finninsh solution quoted by Virne is the best one. What they have in German army is absurd. Army is not a social club or civil right lovefest: it has to be effective. The only prerequisite to be abolished should be male sex. Not length, not weight, not strength, stamina or whatever, just everyone should be able to meet the requirements and enroll regardless of his sex. Women should not have any 'adjusted' tables because of their being women. As said above, army isn't about someone's supposed right to serve in the army.

Now imagine separate ladies' on ships and planes -the cost, the space - ultimately less of those ships built (Ragusa's example from #sorcerers).

Another thing is that we all know what happens to female POWs and what's the supposed torturing focus when eliciting information from them. Women also tend to get pregnant sometimes, not only by victorious enemy soldiers, and this is not good for any army. IMHO grunt is a male profession.

Edit: In our Polish army (OK, let's call it an army), they're in medical service, probably some administration, a few engineers and even regular officers but the latter have to meet normal requirements for men except being male, which results in about five female sub-lieutenants graduating each year.

Well out of the 7 females we had in our house, 3 were actually looking pretty much ok. Though that was while in the army, so I guess my perception was flawed at the time. :) There are no supermodels there though, at least according to my experience.

We got 2 sergeants and 5 recruits who came in later on. The military police training/living quarters was a separate building from everything else. And no, I'm not talking about the guardhouse where you are in only when you're in active militarypolice duty (and in fact only those who are army security officials have permission to be in the guardhouse anyway). Anyway, the training/living quarters was also the place where most of the females were accomodated regardless of their actual unit (there were like 10 in the entire brigade (not sure if that's the correct term), of which 7 like I said were with us), so that made for some interesting times. The last 3 months we spent with the girls watching movies and eating pizza during the nights, as we had no watchers who could've filed complaints. :)

Women being in the same shower with men at the same time doesn't seem that bad. But considering the modern society, it is a bit too harsh, even if it is in the military. Though a war in reality would not make such a difference anymore, so it's a question of how far to what's gonna be real are you willing to go in the army.

[IMG] But what about the movies?! What to do with the scenes of men bending over to pick up the soap from the floor?

    Oh, wait! That's a prison-thing.

I personally don't see a problem, as long as there are people to keep the peace... good people with better morals then most. In other words, since we don't exactly have a army of sir Gawain's (The polite one, not the mean one portrayed all the time) this is a temporary no-no, until people all have morals like that or like Keitaro's. ^_^

Hmmm...I kind of wish that was the deal here in the US. When I was at an air show at the local air force base there were so many hot chicks in uniforms there it made me want to lie about my asthma so I could join! :rolling:

A lame movie sometime ago, Starship troopers, showing how the world in future works. Men and women play football as a team, fight as a team, shower as a team, sleep as a team.

It looks weird because you are conditioned (by society, by surrounding, by history, by others) to feel weird. If you get used to it, well it's not much of a big deal. Japanese has been famous for their bisexual public bath already.

If your country has fallen, men or women, nobles or peasants, all are prisoners.

In the Canadian army, there is one shower for the males and one for the females. Boys apparently stare at the wall to avoid accusations of "you're looking at my dick!" but I can tell you from personal experience that girls comment sympathetically on each other's bruises and scars, admiringly on each other's muscles ("you go girl!") and tattoos etc. I imagine if they were all thrown into one shower together the culture clash would be quite something. But if you're weirded out by people of whatever gender seeing you naked, don't join the army. You end up doing a lot of your ablutions in the tent during manoeuvres and if you're trying to do so while cowering beneath a sleeping bag you'll never get dressed in time to get breakfast.
