I've been having this bad feeling about Vista for some time now. I keep reading about all this good stuff its going to have, but this feeling keeps coming back that it will be like the first release of Windows 95 and 98, and how they had to go back and release 98SE because they didn't get it right the first time.

Then I read this and it made me stop and think that my feelings have been correct:

Yeah, "think about it." How profound is that?

Good thing they decided to delay it. I've worked with a beta of Vista, and man, what a nightmare. The lags are unbelievable, and I crashed it simply by plugging my USB memory stick in the comp. They got some serious work tailored to make Vista ready for launch. It looks promising, though. I don't quite like the interface, but fortunatly it can be set to the Classic Windows look.

I think most people are going to stick with XP for a long time after Vista is released. Me included, most likely. As far as I'm concerned, XP is the best OS M$ has made to date, and I'm not in any rush to crash-test Vista.

Considering how long Vista has been delayed already, I can't say I'm surprised. From all appearances it does appear to be a rehash of the original Win98 (probably the worst OS to come out of M$)

I'm personally sticking with XP at the very very least until Vista SP1 comes out. Which, knowing M$'s pattern over the last decade or so, shouldn't be that long after Vista's release. The OS *may* be acceptably stable after that.

The worst OS Microsoft has ever made is DOS.

    Indeed.

DOS, well... it's basic, it's ugly, it's unforgiving of typos, but it's a necessary evil, I guess. It was the base of everything.

I'll be sticking with XP Pro until like most of you, SP1 is out.

The programmers at M$ better stack up on caffeine, because they've got looooooooong nights ahead of them to polish Vista to an acceptable number of bugs.

Very disappointing. I was planning on building a new computer when the Conroe-based CPUs and Vista came out. If Conroe comes out on schedule, I'm not sure if I want to wait until January, but I also hate upgrading OS's (obviously since I'm still using Win98)... Dilemma. :)

From what I understand Microsoft is saying Vista will be ready in November (instead of October), but that they won't release it to consumers until January because that's what their partners want. Seems oddball to me, but I guess it takes time to get everything ready for the holiday season and OEM's don't want to have to guess at whether there will be another delay to ruin things...

BTA, do yourself a favour and go for XP instead. You can't go wrong with XP.

Agreed. While I am a big NT fan, XP Pro is hard to beat.

Oh, I understand that XP is good and that's what I will do if Vista gets delayed longer that I want to wait, or if it gets bad reviews, but since I'll be building a new machine, I'd like to have as much new stuff as I can get my hands on :)

I've heard the Betas of Vista have been doing well, so I'll be surprised if it's junk when it comes out.

Oh, and as far as Linux is concerned, I always convert my old machines to Linux once my new machines prove themselves, so I've had a Linux version since Red Hat Linux 6.0.

BTA - You can do the same as I do; run both XP and 98. Win98 is still good for some old games (and other software) that just won't run on XP. I had the same idea as BTA, but then I thought, I won't know what's crashing my system; the new hardware, or the new OS. :mommy:

Who cares if Vista is delayed? I'm doing fine without it, so what impact would it have on my life?

@ HB: What are you talking about?! It's Windows Vista! It will have semi-transparent menus! It will bring "clarity to your world"! It will "enhance your confidence in PC technology and give you a new outlook on the digital world around you"! It will "help you stay in touch"! With it "you can enjoy life more"!

    :p

@BTA: Actually I've heard from a few people who have betas of Vista, and according to them it is an absolute nightmare to get to run properly. Might be the reason why Microsoft have delayed its release, but it really is NOT an indication that the final version will be any good. If I were you I'd get XP when the Conroe gets out, and wait at least until SP1 comes out before getting Vista.

Same as others: sticking with XP. Why? Games don't work on Vista and if I'd want to lose the games, I'd take SuSe Linux for free rather than pay big money to a greedy company.

IMO, there is now two ways to upgrade: it's either open source or commercial. Doing a research paper about this too, for my university.

Well, of course you wouldn't expect the Betas to run flawlessly. What would they be doing for the next 7-9 months if it were ready to go right now? Paul Thurrott gives pretty in-depth reviews of the CTP's and he's pretty happy with the February CTP - it was the first one he was able to install with no device manager issues. And like I said, I wouldn't get it if the reviews after its release were bad.

I'm not sure where you got that idea. Who said you won't be able to play the XP games with Vista? In fact I've seen compatibility lists for the Betas that include many of the most popular games, and I have also heard that people have been able to install XP drivers on Vista. And once it's released, all new games will be compatible with Vista, and most old games likely will be, just like it was with XP.

And like I said, I do both.

You know, when XP came out, I flat out refused to buy it. I was so stuck on Win2k Pro...but once SP1 came standard on all new disks, I decided to take the plunge, and now i'm stuck on XP! :p

I doubt I'll upgrade to Vista until I literally have to, and that won't be until SP1 come out for Vista...and even then, I'll wait in the shadows to see if SP1 for Vista is anything like SP2 for XP.

If you understood that, good...if not, stand behind HB. :p :rolling:
