. . . called the 'b i t c h' queen? That's an interesting title for a deity. Or maybe it has different connotations in the AD&D world.

    Yes, Umberlee is a deity.

She is the god of sailors and the sea. If you played BGI, there was a quest in which the fishermen weren't paying proper tribute to Umberlee, and you had the option of killing the priestess of Umberlee, or returning the bowl to her.

I do not know why she is called the "b itch Queen", but I have to assume it is due to her violent (as in storms) demeanor. All I can say is that many other gods have nicknames as well, that make equally little sense.

Don't know why she's called the ***** queen.

@kukec: There are many dead dieties. Many died in the times of trouble, because they were mortals then. So now you know that.

Hmmm that explains things. I remember first hearing the priestesses say it at the temple in BG1. I was like, "Excuse me?" :D

There were a few (but not many) gods that died during the Time of Troubles, but I do not believe Umberlee was one of them. In fact, because she is still worshipped suggests that Umberlee was not one of the now-dead gods. While I do not know precisely how many died (I know of Mystra, Bane and Bhaal) I do not think there were many others. Maybe two or three more tops.
